Will AMD ever compete with Intel again?

Talking in terms of performance, do you think AMD will ever compete with Intel again? Would be good to see them bring a great chip out like in the Athlon days but since God knows how long they haven't been able to.

Intel dropped the ball with the P4, focussing on chasing those extra mhz trying to push up the clock speed made them predictable for god knows how long, which gave AMD the initative.

Since AMD is apparentely dropping focus on competing directly with Intel, it may cause Intel to stagnate again allowing AMD to bring something to the table that will give Intel a run for their money :)

There was an ex-AMD employee posting on a Mac forum last year who as good as said that the talented people being AMD's previous success had gone or jumped ship due to bad management decisions, most AMD fanboys wrote him off as bitter but he was spot on about BD being too little too late at a time when everyone (including me) was expecting it to be a great chip.

They probably no longer have the talent to compete with Intel at the high end so have opted to focus on other areas.

They will and are but in different segments. Their slogan the future is fusion says it all really. For a low power PC that can do every day tasks and HD video/light gaming their APUs are brilliant and only getting better. Anyone who thinks SuperPi scores are important to Joe Bloggs are delusional, reasonable FPS while the coerce their naked Sims about poorly decorated virtual homes is :p

Jesus christ! someone is touchy! what difference does it make to you!

dont apoligise , some people here are just grumpy! We arent all like that.

it gets annoying seeing the same old tripe posted time and time again, what people don't know how to use the search feature?

in what way is it annoying??? you must have a really low threshold before getting annoyed!

people speculating, and it is just that on well typically Intel Vs AMD.
and threshold, well yeah i get easily bored on a sunday morning :p

AMD are still competing with Intel, but not in desktop format. AMD are focusing more on their mobile processors.

i suggest if u get annoyed about people doing this, just ignore the thread and don't post in it

simple

theres no rule saying u must post in every thread

yeah too true dude, it is a perfectly legit thread and a one for potential great discussions, some people need to be less touchy.

back on topic, anyone can see Advanced Micro Devices are in a fantastic position right now to be fair. Bulldozer has 'potential' even though it gets written off at every single turn, but lets not get into that or it will just start the 2500K crowd with their 'instructions per clock' business off again. Llano is the best and almost only option in its target market, Brazos is fantastic and dominant in its target market, Bulldozer is holding its own in the server market, AMD have performed and almost clean sweep of the next generation console market, Trinity is going to murder Intel in the 'Llano' market when it comes out. in the desktop market we have Piledriver on the horizon with its various tweaks and power consumption tweaks, Windows 8 has fantastic support for Bulldozer and its architecture, runs like a dream.

think AMD are at their 'rock bottom' right now, but the only way is up and I for one predict they have a good marketing plan in place and the products to compete with Intel in a number of markets, the only market they are getting 'outclassed' in (which is subjective at best most of the time) is the higher end desktop market, they were quoted to be one of the 'most honest' companies in the US or something like that a while ago and stock market sites recommend them as a good bet if your wanting to invest in stock as they look set to have a strong year.

so to answer the topic, yes AMD will compete with Intel and are killing them in some markets, with HSAIL looming in the very near future and Trinity it can only get better, Intel have just been dropped by Apple as suppliers of notebook chips, so things aren't going all Intel way for once.

Never again as Intel's R&D budget nowadays dwarfs AMD's profit  Intel can afford to be several steps ahead they just hold back the fastest CPU's for years now until channel stocks are low which is why they only bring out new tech once/twice a year.

Nothing AMD do can make any difference now they only made inroads when Intel made mistakes on the P4 series in the early 2000's. AMD should probably concentrate on GPU's only as Nvidia are about to give them another kicking on that I cannot see AMD being around in 10 years the way things are going now they survive by being a budget option but eventually investors will withdraw support as Intel/Nvidia are safer choices!

The first pc I built was AMD so in a way I have a softspot for them.
I have used Intel since though as the cpu's have simply been better.
To redress somewhat I have used more ATI/AMD gfx cards than Nvidia though :D

Hope they can compete sometime as that helps the likes of us, but we will see I suppose.
