Will an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 improve speeds?

Hi,

recently switched over to Virgins 100MB/s fibre and after a abysmal week or so with the Superdud, i yesterday went out and bought an Asus RT-N66U router and have switched the Superdud into modem mode.

Must say the N66U is a fantastic piece of kit, would recommend to anyone.

Wireless speeds in bedroom, 2 floors above modem/router were: -

Superhub - 1MB/s with constant drop outs
N66U - 30MB/s rock solid, been downloading all night no problems.

Whilst that is a 30x improvement, I’m still not satisfied as want as close as possible to the 100MB/s wirelessly.

If in the same room as the router i still only get around 40MB/s on the Asus, which is the same as the Superhub. So I’m thinking it’s my network card that is holding me back?

Currently got installed a BROADCOM 802.11N MINI CARD BCM94313HMGB, which from searching online isn’t very good. Two antenna's and does not pick up 5GHz

I’m thinking of upgrading to the Intel Ultimate-N 6300, as has 3 antennas and is dual band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Will this improve my speeds?

I'm not going to bother with homeplugs as you lose to much speed from what ive gathered. I'm going to wire crucial stuff like my PC, have ordered a 50m cat 5e shielded cable, plus might stick a switch in there but still want the best wireless possible as well.

I replaced the Broadcom card in my laptop with an Intel 6200. A large improvement in terms of signal strength and range, but I am not sure on any speed increases.

I've got an Intel 6230 and an Asus n66u, when in the same room I get a link speed of 300mbit, and get an average transfer rate of 17MB/s so around 110mbit real world speeds. Your 6300 has a Max link rate of 450mbit so should be better!!

Either ive got a fake or its broken, but im getting horrible performance out of the n 6300. Barely connects, locks up PC and even then speeds are super slow, like 8Mb/s, and all this in the same room as the router. Got it for £20 from a seller on the rain forrest.

Have done a fresh install, still no luck.

Anyone know how to identify a fake one?

Yep, they work and is recognised in device manager after they are installed.

Apparently there were loads of fakes being sold, so maybe i got a fake. anyhow going to install windows updates and test again.

Hoping someone can help!!

The Intel 6300 connects fine and can do light browsing. As soon a i try downloading or run a speed test, its bugs out and i lose all signal. When running Windows diagnostics its says

"the default gateway is not available"

It resets it and we start again, works fine, then bugs out again over and over.

I plug in my wireless usb dongle and it works fine?

Any ideas?

As above my 6230 is flawless with the N66U, I would suggest you return the card for a replacement? It definatly sounds like the card is at fault.

Sounds like a fake / faulty card. I changed from an Intel BGN1000 and bought a 6300 and the wifi strength is great now. Also bought a Cisco E4200 so it'll connect at 450mbit too :)

I bought one from an auction site and it was rubbish, had to buy one direct from the manufacturor of my laptop in the end, about £45 ish but well worth it.

hey bud,

not sure about the intel but I do know our RT-66U's are capable of streaming on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies for better throughput. Might want to get something made by Asus? or something that will allow the use of both frequencies at the same time.
