Will anyone ever try to rival Intel?

My question is simple,

Do we think any other company will try and catch Intel in the processor market?

AMD are the only other well advertised company out there and as it stands are not on the same level. Maybe their new Zen chip next year will take them closer, who knows? I would like if they could get it right and give Intel more to think about.

I just wonder if another large company such as Samsung will ever delve into this market in a large way? I only mention Samsung as they have produced a lot of ram in the past and I think are producing processors for phones. Along way off high end cpu chips I know. Sony I don't know if they have ever produced pc components. I'm not really sure how many other companies could give it a go?

What do you think?

I don't believe any new players will be granted an X86 licence, and any who already have one would have acted by now. It's a huge risk as there would be enormous upfront R&D costs, and gaining market traction would take time resulting in little return on the investment in the short/medium term.

AMD are still the best hope in my view.

I have to agree and think AMD is our only hope when Zen arrives. They have done it before with the AMD64 cpu's but they weren't this far behind. I really can't see Zen coming out of nowhere and levelling the playing field with Intels then current cpu's. It would be nice and good for us if they could but I just can't see it happening.

There was a 3rd player for while called Cyrix who along with AMD made Intel look as if they were standing still. I can't quite remember the time frame I think it was around the turn of millennium but as AMD gain strength and as Intel went from Pentium 3 to the new Pentium 4's Cryrix fell away pretty quickly and were soon forgotten.

I hope someone does because its getting a bit boring watching intel bumping their CPU speeds by 5% every year with zero competition.

This. We need competition to get things moving. People as far back as Sandybridge have little incentive to upgrade, that's how stagnant the CPU market has become.

I'm sure AMD will have their time again. A few years ago everybody was hating on Intel for the Prescott and loving AMD's Athlons. What will probably happen is that Intel will get too comfy and, WHAM, AMD come out with something a little groundbreaking and catch Intel in a product lull. I hope so anyway.
