hello i am looking to buy ATI Radeon X1950 XT-X ***Crossfire/Master Edition*** SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR4 (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-051-CO). my friend says it wont run on its own only with slave card is this true ?

As said, your friend is either pulling your leg or doesn't know what he's talking about. An X1900CE (Crossfire Edition) will run perfectly fine on its own. In fact, due to availability and pricing, it's often best to buy one first if you plan to go Crossfire later.

As said above, yes the master card will run on its own, it just acts like any other x1900, until you pair it with another. :)

Welcome to the forums btw. :D

I actually said to him I wasnt sure, and that he should join up to these forums and ask the experts on here as they know a lot more than me

Oh and Eugob, you can build your new rig on your own :p

From my understanding the only difference is a slight drop in performance of a few percent with the Master edition. I assume this is because it has to control the slave so perhaps this doesn't occur when it's on its own. Anyone know if this is true or not?

I have never heard that?
I thought it would be just as quick as any other X1900XT card, if run on its own.

Well,
the likes of the HIS X1900 Master are clocked a wee bit slower (621/1440) compared to a normal XT, but seeing as how it should be able to clock to XTX speeds, its irrelevant..

Possibly because it would be the first of the two to overheat, both because it has the extra task of controlling the slave and because of it's positioning. It's heat output would be blocked by the other cards heat. If you are going to be overclocking an SLI or Crossfire setup then I'd reccommend some extra cooling to dissipate the heat between the two cards.
