Just moved into new house at the weekend and the room where my computer will be has no phone socket for connecting the router.

The BT line comes into the loft at the top of the house (Bungalow type) and then goes to socket in hallway and then extended into daughters bedroom.

I cant run anything directly to these as the room I want to run to is across a hallway. I don't want the router in my daughters room and there is no power socket in the hallway.

What would be the easiest way to get an additional socket wired up in the room with the computer?

Any suggestions welcome as I have engineer visiting on Wednesday and I'm not sure how much or little they will be allowed to do.

I had an engineer at mine a few months back when I got fibre installed. I also required the master socket to be moved, which he did do, but I lost the extension in the living room, as they cannot feed off the master socket with existing extensions IIRC (?)

Living in a bungalow also, I had to get the master socket moved from my sons room, as their was no power, into the main bedroom. While they did do it, we spend 3 hours trying to re-wire it which involved me crawling around in the attic for far too long.

In short, yes they can and will, but be prepared for it to be a lengthy process!

I recently signed up with BT for their 76 Meg Unlimited Broadband. I had some problems to start with, the router cutting out and speeds dropping.

I also live in a bungalow and have a socket in the hall that I run a cable under the carpet to my bedroom where I have my computer.

BT sent an engineer out and he put a master socket in my bedroom.

I had my FTTC installed over a year ago and also wanted my master socket moved. So thinking ahead, i bought a roll of cable. I then did my own cable routing from the junction box outside my house to the room i wanted the master socket in. When the BT guy came to install the FTTC, he was more than happy to terminate both ends of the cable for me. It took him no time at all and because i had routed the cable myself, it was completely hidden with no nasty holes where i didn't want them. It was then just a case of removing the old cable and box and making good when he had gone.

Was visited today by BT Openreach subcontractor and was not happy with original work carried out.

Replied to text message request for feedback and said I wasn't happy with the work and they sent someone out who put it exactly the way I wanted it.

Top marks to them for the eventual result got my socket right next to main PC.

It was indeed.

Think the problem is they are paid per job and therefore don't want to spend a lot of time on something which is essentially switching something on at the junction box and then plugging in a router to verify if working.
