Will C2D 6600s always be good overclockers?

Hi all.

I'm just about to build a new C2D rig, and was thinking of buying a 6600 as it seems to overclock really well.

Will these processors always be good clockers, or is it because they are still fairly new and Intel will eventually tighten up on this?

I remember in the old days, that new processors were good clockers, but after a time, Intel improved their production/binning and the processors wouldn't clock as well.

They are a brand new design and so will always overclock well. The chips all come off the same silicon with some having cache chopped off (6300 etc). Its a bit like when the Pentium 4 'B' came out with crazy 2.4 @ 3.2+ overclocks :)

I've got a 6600 ticking over at 3.2 now with only a tiny increase in voltage. It can go a bit more.. 3.4 ish I expect but am happy with it at 3.2.

Thanks for the info, Duke. It was the the P4 'B' I was originally thinking of :D

But not sure I explained what I meant properly...

If I bought a 6600 towards the end on January, is it still likely to overclock as well as the current batches do, or will Intel have sorted out their end by then? It is possible that Intel will see people buying cheaper CPUs and overclocking then, and then either locking the multipliers, or binning faster CPUs as 6800s.

Just worried that I buy a 6600 at the end of Jan, and find I can only run it at 2.4GHz :D

When it comes to overclocking, nothings guaranteed.

I think you'll always get more than 2.4Ghz with a 6600, but how much is not written in stone.

However, I've just recently bought my E6600 and its running @ 3.2Ghz on the stock heatsink, till my new Arctic Freezer 7 arrives.

I'm hoping to squeeze 3.4 out of it as a 1ghz overclock would be nice. ;)

I reckon you'll be very unlucky not to hit at least 3ghz with one.

Cheers, DP.

I guess I'll have to just cross my fingers :D I'm hoping to get 3GHz, but don't really want to push it any further.

Can't wait to get my new rig... but am waiting for eVGA to sort out the BIOS on their 680 mobo before I buy ;)
