will civ5 play without steam

reason I ask is I bought it for the mrs not realising there is a one time connection to steam. I am however wondering if it can play without steam as there is no internet on the pc she will be using?

I bought the retail boxed delux version online (and in very tiny writting on the back and at the very bottom it refers to steam lol)

I'm pretty certain that because this is a steamplay game you need to install it within steam and have to be online at least once to get it to activate. However, once it is installed you can simply play it in offline mode indefinitely.

Is there any way you can hook her machine up temporarily to get it activated?
 
I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that but it seems I'll be left with no choice. Thanks for the reply.
