will DX10 cards be smaller?

i would imagine as time goes on an NVIDIA release there 8600GT (basically mid-range version of 8800) that cards will get smaller, same goes for ATI i would imagine, or at least i hope

The reason these cards are so long is because of the amount of chips needed. The gpu is much larger than previous gpus, and there is now a seperate chip for the TDMS logic and RAMDACs, which are usually contained in the gpu. There are also 12 ram chips (1Gb cards will have 16  ), so don't expect these cards to get much smaller, even with a smaller fab process.

The cards getting bigger with more stuff on has diminishing returns though. As they start to get several km long the lag from the shear distance the electrons have to travel will start to cause an issue... That is before they start connecting the different bits with different halves of the same atom.
