Will extra RAM effect my CPU clock speed?

Hi Folks,

I've just received delivery of the below:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-170-OE

However my 8GB RAM upgrade was missed from the order, I've already logged a call with OcUK Support regarding that issue.

I was wondering, if the extra RAM is sent to me, will I need to make any modifications to the CPU clock speed, will the extra RAM effect it?

I've never overclocked before, so would need someone to hold my hand if I did it myself. What's the chance they will say it needs to be RMA'd so they can re-overclock it?

Cheers

Iirc correctly ram can affect an over clock.

All the ocuk bundles state that oc may be lost if upgrading ram.

Edit: "most" of the ocuk bundles state;

Note - Please note that adding in additional memory to the spare slots will require new BIOS settings and the maximum clock speed attainable may be significantly reduced. OcUK recommend a quality brand PSU for use with all our bundles such as the Corsair TX & HX range. Updating the BIOS on the overclocked bundle range will void the warranty on the overclock. If you update the BIOS we will no longer be able to provide support for configuring and maintaining the CPU overclock.

So on that basis, as the oc has been done by OcUK, would they talk me through how to oc my machine with the extra RAM?

Sorry I didn't copy it properly :(

Erm not sure as you're not updating bios but you are changing the hardware which would i presume would invalidate the oc warranty.

Best off asking in the customer service section they could give you a definitive answer.

it isn't capacity that affects the CPU

It is the extra DIMM slots being filled which causes higher stress on the memory controller (on the CPU) which can cause a previously stable overclock to become unstable due to a higher quantity of occupied DIMM slots!

Well, if the extra RAM is sent to me I'll be going from 2x4GB to 4x4GB, is it likely to make the CPU clock drop? Will this end up in the unit being RMA'd for the oc to be done again?

It might not boot properly or crash under stress or it might be fine.

Is it the same ram?

and no you wouldn't be able to rma it as there's nothing wrong with the kit only the alterations you've made.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what their support team comes back with as it is their (OcUK) fault that the RAM kit is missing :(

Thanks for your help Mynight and NathWraith :)

An update to this, Evoaddict in the OcUK Customer Services forum has informed me that adding the 2 extra sticks should not affect the overclock as the Haswell chip works differently.

Not sure what difference is, but good to know everything will be all right.

Once again, thanks folks :)
