Will games reach a point for no more upgrades?

I was wondering when does everyone think that upgrading will soon die out.

The GFX in games are pretty awesome right now and look extreamely realistic.

So when do you think we will reach a point where it just looks life like?

However...

I'd like to bring something up.

3D. :(

Yes this will mean that every year, when we have perfected GFX of games, we will need to upgrade our stuff to support the latest 3D technology.

not until they're rendered by your own visual cortex.

then you'll have to start upgrading your brain :p

We thought games were extremely realistic 5 years ago, and even now we are an enormously long way from photo realistic graphics.

I think movie CGI is a good indication of were we're heading in terms of real time imaging

You could say CG cutscenes in games years back are being done realtime in the games of today

But games of today are hardly "extremely realistic" looking imho

I've liked some of the post processing being brought into games as of late, such as depth of field, motion blur, the use of virtual cameras, think it's a step in the right direction

The next big hurdle I think devs will focus on, hardware permiting, is lighting, full dynamic lighting and self shadowing objects make a huge difference

Also today's body and facial animation in games leaves a lot to be desired aswell.

Yeah but the jump from 5 years ago and now is huge!

Especially from 10 years ago to 5 years ago was rather small.

Rather intereasting article of all rather good games over the past 18 years.

The 3 year jump is rather huge aswell tbh!
That's a great article... brought back a lot of memories.

It's a shame it doesn't also show how more fluid games have become over the years. You can see from the screenshots how textures have become more detailed, objects have become smoother and less "jaggy", etc... but screenshots can't show the difference in how the games played. That's what blew me away initially with Doom, and later with Counter Strike, and more recently with Far Cry and lastly with Crysis.
