Hi all,

on the lookout for some ram for a Toshiba A100-200 laptop it's listed as taking 533Mhz ram, but that seems to be rarer (and more pricey now). my question is, would higher speed ram work in this laptop and just "down-clock"?

thanks in advance!

If it has 533 in the SPD, then yes it should work. Most 667 and 800 will but it's hard to say for sure as it depends on the BIOS and the memory. But, notebook stuff in general is pretty tolerant.

what does SPD mean?

Thanks for the tip. Suppose because I don't know anything about the BIOS I am better sticking to the correct speed?

SPD = serial presence detect. In short, there is a bit of information programmed onto a memory module. The BIOS reads this information at POST and uses it to set the proper BIOS settings for the memory voltage and timings. And, you really don't need to know about setting up a BIOS on a laptop. Their BIOS's are VERY limited anyway. They are intentionally set up to be pretty much plug n play on the memory.

Try our MEMORY FINDER and see what it says.

oh right! didn't know that.

thanks for that, That memory configurator is far better than crucial's, Theirs didn't even recognise the laptop model!

It came up with :

Memory Type
DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) SODIMM

Size
1GB

Latency
4-4-4-12

Format
200-pin SODIMM

Heat Spreader
None
