Basicly, for permanent staff the rule is if they can't get to work and the office is closed they get the day off but still get paid.

But im on a one month contract coming up to the last week, I'm paid by the hour and fill in a timesheet each week, Will I still be paid if I cant get to work?

No =(

But look on the bright side. It also means we don't have to pay tax on what we would have been paid had we gone to work, so really we're saving moneys!

Disclaimer: this logic may be somewhat flawed

Afraid not, as a contractor you are either at work or not, if not, you won't get paid...

Down side of contracting :(

As above nope, was talking to a chap at work who was snowed in last year, work called him and needed him desperately, he agrees to make his way there at their request and it took him 3 hours to make what is normally a 30 minute trip.

work didn't pay him for the 3 hours and only paid him from his time of arrival

if there's the merest hint of me getting cut off from work they can poke the idea of me battling in my way in on my own time pffft

It's quite normal for employers not to pay staff if they cannot get in due to adverse weather, contractors or not.

Only if the office closes due to the bad weather. If YOU cannot get to work but others do you are not entitled to be paid.

So basically you will be paid if the Boss closes the office/factory/shop etc, but not if you just can't walk down your drive.

Generous employer. My place of work like most do not pay even permanent salaried people even ifm the place is closed. If you want paying, you take it from your holiday allowance.

My boss's theory goes as follows which has logic. Why should I pay everybody for not working when I have already lost £1000's by everybody not making it to work. So the pain is shared.

For us, if you cant get to work then you take the day out of your holiday entitlement.

Yeah my workplace does that. It's an embuggerance, because sometimes it literally is impossible. The car won't get up the street, all buses and trains are cancelled, you live 20 miles away. How the hell are you supposed to get to work in that situation? Teleport? I'll just give Scotty a ring and see if he can beam me up and plonk me down at my desk. Cheers Scotty, I owe you a drink.

And how is that your employer's fault? They are quite within their rights not to pay you.

I think it then also comes down to the inconvenience on yourself and as to where you live.

When it snowed the year before, I used to live outside London and couldn't get in because no trains were running, I didn't get paid.

Now I live in London and can walk to work (taking about an hour) but it means I get paid.

Obviously understandably not every place of work can be reached by walking or such, but it kind of shows that the closer you live, the less likely you are to run in to problems when the weather is bad.

Though also means you have less excuse to skive off!
(I've worked with people who have said they are snowed in, despite it only being a couple of inches and them living less than an hour walk away.)

My work not only doesn't pay us, but any time we miss due to snow will have to be made up.

I'm not very happy with this, means if I get snowed in for 3 days which could be likely, I somehow have to make up 22.5 hours!?

Last place I worked were fine with it, entire site shut for 3 weeks.

Not sure about the new place, however it's a 10 min walk for me so worst case, I hike it :D

Nothing like sitting in with no users complaining of something not working playing quake over the network :D
