Will i be wasting my time?

Just under a year ago I applied for broadband for my parent’s house in Devon, but the distance from the exchange was too great and I could not get any sync or connection (whatever it is called), even with a BT engineer coming to have a look.

Until recently the BT availability checker has been saying that I would be very unlikely I could get bb. However now it say that I would be able to get a connection of 2mb. Other sites however still say that the length of my line is too great and I wouldn’t be able to get a connection.

Is there a recent change in technology that would enable me to get bb or am I wasting my time again?

thx

maybe the checker is now updated with MAX distances????

Before it may have been too long for standard (ie non max) connections speeds.

How long has Home250 been out? Can't remember when it was released but could be worth a go if he went for Home500 last time, I think Zen still offer it?

But doesn't max sync lower then 512? - at 256 or thereabouts?

Like home250 has for ages?
There's also the small issue of 512kbps data rate increments with Max (so unless you can sync >512kbps, you'll presumably get nothing, or it'll all break or something).

The problem is if the line's been marked unable to do home500, you'll have boundless fun getting any ISP to accept an order for home250 anyway.

What does www.bt.com/broadband say, exactly (removing phone numbers etc)?

Phone BT, tell them you the situation and they should be able to run checks that will give you a deffinite yes/no.

http://www.bt.com/broadband/ says

For Telephone Number ******on Exchange TOR

Our initial test on your line indicates that it is VERY UNLIKELY your line will support a reliable broadband service, with current technology. However, an order for 250Kbps broadband speed will still be accepted, but an engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.

and from http://www.bt.com/broadband/bb_availability_result.jsp

Our initial test on your line indicates that you should be able to have BT Broadband with download speeds up to 8Mb.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to order.

Order BT Broadband online and get a FREE modem router saving you a £25 charge which applies if you order by phone.

Missed messages from bt :P

But a month or so ago the on that now says that i could get a line of 8mb blah blah said that i couldnt get anything ill give em a ring tomoz

The up to 8mbps bit is the key part, even if your line could only get 100kbps it'd still come under up to 8mbps.
