im about to upgrade my pc and im wondering what sort of performance increase im gonna see?

here is my current system

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-57 Processor
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 Dual Channel Platinum Series
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
Thermaltake Purepower 560W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

and on wednesday it will be this

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 (at a minimum of 3gig)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8000C5 1000MHz ReaperX
Abit IP35
Corsair HX 620W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

i tried some searches but its hard to find any benchmarks that use the same game/software to test both processors, will i get more from my 8800gt with the new processor? people have said that my fx-57 was a bottleneck but to be honest i dont really understand why a processor will reduce the performance of a graphics card. maybe someone could explain this to me too?

I don't think you'll see a quantum leap in games and anything single threaded.
If you look at the machines in my sig (the AMD user to have the 8800GTX in it), the difference was about 20% in terms of benchmarks and so on. Some games however FLY along on the new box, particularly any that are multithreaded (supcom, and supcom-fa basically LOL). A couple (Q4) are like intelphobic or something, and run worse.

Overall, the machine is "snappier" (although I've noticed a tendancy for it to "ponder" before it actually starts some things...be interested to hear your experience regarding initial response times and so on, once you complete the upgrade), and 4 cores actually lets windows multitask in a reasonable way.

Aquamark went from 145K to about 186K 3dMark06 from 12K to 14.5K

I'm not sure about your CPU but if lets say you got something like 1.8ghz CPU single core old amd64 and 8800GTS with it and you try to play something like CoD4, your graphic card won't even use all of its power to play it at max while your CPU just wont keep up because its too slow to run the game.
So you always choose components that suit each other and nothing is slower than the rest. For example it would be a waste to buy 8800gts to some old CPU or getting quad, 9800gtx and 1gb of ram.

I guess you get the idea.

Moreover, you can keep your TT PSU, it will do just fine, also I wouldnt take those reapers for q6600, PC6400 ram is more than fine and you won't see any difference (unless you OC on liquid nitrogen to 4.5ghz or something) on this so save your pennies and get good PC6400 ram.

As said in previous posts it really depends on what game. The Source engine (HL2/TF2/CS:S) all are CPU dependant so on that front you'll see a nice difference. But other games like COD (which are GPU dependant) you'll only notice a slight increase.

Major differences will depend on what OS you are on. If you are on vista then you'll see a nice gain :) (especially with 4gb ram ;))

Overall your incoming upgrade looks like a worthwhile hit on your wallet :)

In most games you won't see a big difference, as the gfx card will be the limiting factor (assuming you are playing in high res with AA/AF). An A64 at 2.8ghz with 1meg cache is no slouch in single threaded programs (such as many games).

Anything supporting multicore or otherwise cpu limited (e.g. SupCom, DiRT etc) should see a fair increase.

Obviously for 'desktop' usage, the new system will be much quicker.
