Hi everyone, I just bought 10 meters HDMI cable so I can connect my PC to my AV receiver and use my TV to watch videos.

My question is, will I be able to get sound this way?

Thanks

I need a Receiver with HDMI 2.0 support to be able to do that.

At the moment my TitanX HDMI goes direct to my 4k TV and then I use DVI-HDMI from the GPU for audio, but that appears in Windows as '1080p' monitor #3.

Does your amp / tv support HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel)?

This allows the TV to "pass back" the audio via HDMI to the TV, so you could have your PC hooked up to the TV (with the TV ARC HDMI channel hooked up to the AMP) and all would work fine.

Yes, but not on the (sole) HDMI 2.0 input.

Edit - Actually I might look in to that as I think I can change ARC between HDMI 2 and 4.

HDMI 4 is the HDMI 2.0 enabled input.

Fiddled around and the TV only passes back 2.0 stereo, so I can get sound using just one cable from the PC, but not 5.1 :(

Nor does ARC allow you to use high resolution formats like DTS HD or 24bit sound.

Disappointing.

You might be right but I've been using Amd on av amps for years.
Amd you can output a range of audio outputs on hdmi 1.4,
My hdmi out of my 7950 goes into my vsx 922 av amp, and another hdmi goes out to the tv, I can play dts hd audio master and 5.1/7.1 movies using xbmc/ or multi channel pcm for gaming

I can't see why you would have a problem with passthrough or even why you need to use it, because you can just turn it off in the menu/or leave it on and have the audio stream through the graphics card sound dsp into the amp. Passthrough is only if you wanted to watch a film using the tv speakers with the amp off, or tv tuner output back to the amp.
