Will I kill a Q6600?

Have some PC's at work which are P4 3.2/3.4Ghz on an Intel 915 chipset. PCs are really end of life but the powers that be have decided to buy a Q6600 G0 to see if it'll work, if it does then they'll upgrade quite a few PCs.

Now I'm likely to do the install but what I was wondering is is this likely to kill the quad?

The BIOS is at the latest but from what I've seen the 915 chipset doesn't support C2D in any form so am worried that I'll end up frying the CPU.

That chipset won't take quads....I don't even think you can put in Core 2 Duo chips.

Why would it fry the chip? It just wouldn't boot most likely

I was thinking from a vcore point of view, not too sure what the vcore of a P4 is but if it's like 1.8 then could end up frying the quad.

Nah these newer chips are virtually indestructible.

...but it won't work anyway so there's no point really

915 cannot 945 can support C2D with the correct vrm but not C2Q.

915 doesn't even support Pentium D let alone a C2D. As said it just won't boot but it's unlikely to fry the chip. They should save the money on Q6600.

Whynot convince them to upgrade motherboard and cpu. An E21*0 could be had with a cheap mobo for the same price as the Q6600.

I've told them that it won't work but they insist on giving it a go plus they seem to have some money to spend so are just ordering any old crap they can.

isnt normaly voltage that will damage a CPU but heat... however I wouldnt like to be the one trying to put 1.8vcore thro a Q6600
