Will I lose a WU?

Hi

Got a PC thats giving me a deadline of 1day1hour left on its current WU. Thats great, means tomorrow at 7 it will be finished. However its being taken offline and dismanteld tommorow at 3pm as its being given to a relative.

They then will not have the internet for few weeks, but what happens in the meantime? When setup for them tommorow at 3pm they will likely use it that evening, so the WU would have finished but would not be able to upload to stanford!

So a simple question, im thinking either one of these would happen?

1.) It would finish the WU, try uploading for say 30mins, realise theres is no internet and discard the WU, therefore that WU is lost, it will then try to download another, hence no internet it wont get very far and will just pause in its current state.

2.) It would finish the WU, try uploading for say 30mins, realise theres is no internet and store the WU in a folder, and when there is internet avaialble it will then upload the WU in few weeks time. It will then try to download another, hence no internet it wont get very far and will just pause in its current state.

3.) It would finish the WU, try uploading for say 30mins, realise theres is no internet and will 'Pause' until there is internet avaiable to upload the WU. It will not try to download anymore WU's, it will remain paused until it can upload the current one.

Which one is correct? if any?

Thankyou :)

None are 100% correct. It will try to connect to the internet, at first just a few minutes apart with the time interval increasing with each failure (so as to keep it from hammering a downed server SETI Classic style). All this time it will hold the WU in queue. The next time it can connect to the 'net it will try to get a new WU and/or trade out the old one. It will NOT delete the WU as it very much wants to send it back.

You could transfer the WU to a different machine and finish it there, could you not?

some WU's have deadlines of over a month so it would probs still be valid unless its been download for a while now, i think it tries to upload the WU and leaves a bigger gap each time it fails IE waits 1hr to try again, then if it fails waots 2 hrs then after that waits 3 hrs it will try again and so on, i could be wrong completely tho tbh :P i think when the client first turns on it tries to send all finished WU's aswell, so when they do get the net and turn on the 1st time with it plugged in, assuming the WU is still valid it will send it, again i could be totally wrong, infact i dont really know why im trying to answer your question as other people here are much more knowledgable :P

*edit*
ah beaten due to my slow typage skillz

LOL mikeymike that is really funny, thanks for the info tho.

I dont know why I went into so much detail anyway! All I needed to know was whether I would lose the WU or not!

Only got it yesterday so still got a huge deadline on it!

Cheers for atleast clearing that up you two!

But Rich how do I transfer the WU? That would seem a decent option.

Also another quick question.

As the PC will be offline for a while is there anyway I could download loadsa WU's that it can fold while its offline, and then upload all of them wen they get the net? Ive heard this can be done, how much hassle is it? Going out now to watch the game but will be eagerly waiting your replys when I gt home. :)

Btw loving the new IE 7.0 :)

There used to be deadlineless WUs available. This is no longer the case as we've up and crunched them all. While we wait for new ones to be generated there will be no WUs to be had if you use the "download work units in batches" option in the config.

To finish the WU on a different machine I propose you do the following:
  1. Stop the service in services.msc
  2. Copy the entire FAH directory to disk or archive it and email it to yourself (as I did this morning when transferring a WU on a Linux client :p)
  3. If the new host machine is Folding already, stop the service of its current WU.
  4. Load the folder up on the new machine
  5. Run the client out of a command-line window with the -oneunit option, setting the MachineID to an appropriate number in -configonly if the new host machine is also Folding
  6. When you've verified that the WU is at home in its new digs, go to the old machine and delete everything except for the client and your client.cfg file.
When the new owner boots up the machine the service will re-start and freak out that its work files are missing. It'll try and fail to download new ones until it can connect to the 'net again. In the mean time the WU will crunch itself out on your machine.

Hi billy

thanks a lot for that im going to transfer it over tomoz.

Its going to be transferred over to a P4 machine, its HT so its already running 2 WU's at once.

So to get this straight im going to disable both WU's on the P4 using services.msc, then copy the folder over, obviously different directory, but then im stuck on step 5, seems abit confusing, dont understand -oneunit ? Do i just go about as if i ws setting uf F@H again as instructed by the sticky on these forums, but include -oneunit AND -config only in the same command line? Im guessing registry edits dont have to be made again as its already folding? Can i activate the two WU's the P4 is already using once i have transfered the folder over? What happens if i dont delete the folder from the first PC, could i just leave it and let it also finish the same WU then let it download another when relatives get internet?

Hmm always been loyal to IE tried firefox before, yeah its faster :) just prefer the layout and stuff of IE it feels more natural lol

BTW thanks for the help Billy as usual :)
