Hi there,

At the moment i have an X1800xl which is quite nice but i would like something more powerful for more gaming needs. The card is running on a Tagan 425W X-eye PSU. I was unable to find the power the x1800xl uses and compare it with either 3850 or 3870. The 8800GT is out of the question since it uses more power than those two cards from what i know. Other parts of my rig are:
Abit AN8
AMD X2 4400+ @ 2.2GHz (can get pushed to 2.5GHz from on my system with tempering the volt just a notch).
Geil PC3200 2GB 4x512 sticks.
Two SATA HDD and a SATA DVD writter -reader
also an M-audio revolution.

Simply put can my current PSU take the load of 3850 or 3870?
Thanks for you help.

If it will, you're going to be utterly borderline. I reckon you're going to be lacking by 20-30W even in an ideal situation tbh. Treat yourself, get something like a 650W, Tagans are good, you should be able to get something back for it second hand :)

The key is the amps on the 12v rail.

The 8800GT officially requires 24A, and your Tagan PSU puts out 22A.

I understand the official power requirements for the 3870 are similar.

So, as above, marginal, but you'll probably find it'll be fine. You could always try it first before stumping up for a replacement?
