Will I notice a big difference in MPG?

I get 22-23mpg round town and recently did 1000+ miles round Europe where I got an average of 36mpg

2006 Cooper S with TD 1.2 alloys (quite a bit lighter than standard so dunno if that helped)

To be honest, I thought you'd actually get quite good MPG from what is, at the end of the day, a 1.6 engine?

There was someone on here claiming something diabolical from a cooper S not so long ago - worked out as 12mpg from the numbers he gave IIRC

I think they are the sort of car that a lot of people will drive HARD, all the time and then complain that they get crap economy. It's perfectly possible to get decent economy from a fast car - the car I'm using ATM does 60 in 6.9s and I'm averaging just under 40mpg...

I find I get similar MPGs regardless how I drive mine. I suppose since the supercharger is always spinning, it's using more fuel compared to a turbo below the boost threshold.

Different car, different intended usage, different gearing, different FI etc etc.

Try telling the above to an Impreza driver.

No matter how my mate drives his cooper s he gets (what i consider) very poor mpg all the time.

Of course, I was just saying that certain people thrash the living daylights out a car and wonder why and that fast car doesnt always mean poor economy.

Oh yes you can always change your driving style to get a slightly better mpg, but some cars are just poor regardless of how you drive them. Took a WR1 out the other week, around 20 - 21mpg on a cruise at 70 mph i've been told (didn't check myself), i've had better out of a V8 S4!

Have you got an instantaneous usage readout in your car? I'm interested to know what it reads when you floor it in 2nd or 3rd.

In which? The Saab has gone - but I did try resetting the average mpg (no instantaneous) and flooring it straight away, managed to get 2.8mpg :D

The MG that I'm driving at the moment barely has a fuel guage!

2.0 high output turbo. That was on full chat up a hill, with a (giggling) passenger.

On a steady motorway cruise it would do 36~37, around town or hooning would give about 20, I tended to average just under 30
