Will I regret going AMD?

I'm just shocked after all these years with AMD, that their own chips aren't even optimised to run with CrossFire. You'd think in this day of age a company would have both of their products singing.

Reminds me when Sauber was leading the race in Malaysia with a Ferrari engine but the factory team couldn't make it work with all their equipment since they couldn't match the pace.

If you was going the AMD route (as is currently), I personally would have gone the AMD3+ route for a better upgrade path (There is new AMD CPU`s Coming in couple months)

Optimising them to run with Crossfire, wut?
It's simply put their CPU's aren't powerful enough.

i went from a 1090t at 3.8ghz with a 6950 (shader unlocked) to a 3930k with the same 6950 and in some games my frame rate nearly doubled, it was always at least a good bit better, depended on each game. Games like skyrim, dirt 3, f1 2011 really benefited, i even gained a little in metro 2033 even though its more gpu limited.

I never had any problem with the fps when using the 1090t but obviously more the better, and obviously the 3930k is an expensive cpu but in terms of gaming it isnt any different to a 2500k/2600k etc so even with a 6950 you'd see the benefit of a 2500k particularly in the long run as you'd likely get a gpu upgrade in before you need to think about upgrading the whole lot.

Thanks for all the info. The build is nearly completed and installed so sending the products back is probably out of the question. The motherboard is am3+ ready but i know that no matter what amd release in the future it aint gonna be as good as intel. Its my first build so i guess im gonna regret a few decisions but you get what you pay for. Im definately going to go for an overclock. Any suggestions on a good cpu cooler that would be suitable for a good safe overclock?

I actually dont think the x4 965 is bad value for money, quite the opposite its really only recently been displaced by intels offerings in that price range, hence why i bought one instead of bulldozer after i sold my 1090t to my brother, couldnt invest in bulldozer its terrible single threaded and floating point performance would cripple my workflow (i already had a am3+ mobo or i'd have gone intel). So i wouldnt waste too much time regretting it, you maybe havent bought the ideal cpu but you havent bought a bad one.

as for overclocking i've got mine running at 4.2 ghz on a spare frio advanced cooler with a crappy single 120mm fan and its fine maxes at ~55-60 degrees in prime 95 so probably any decent air cooler is going to do a fine job and keep in mind that your cooler will likely transfer onto your next upgrade so dont buy the cheapest you can but on the same hand no need to get silly with it either. I found overclocking the 965 good fun and quite forgiving so if your new to overclocking its a good place to start.
