Guys, i had to take out an itx mobo from my daughters pc case so that i could remove the io shroud to get to the cmos battery so that i could replace it.

To remove the io shroud i had to remove some screws on the rear of the mobo. While doing this i inadvertently slipped and one of the very tiny square 'things' soldered to the mobo came off completely!! There are numerous on the back of the mobo. All over the place...

Well, after assembling everything the pc works fine.

I thought the pc wouldnt work or at the very least have an issue but no.....

What do those 'things' do?

I cant post a pic.....

Its the rear of the mobo. It has loads of those tiny square things that are soldered to it. I broke one off....just curious if it will cause any long term issues?

If everything is working now, then probably not.

From what I can gather, they help to stabilise the power delivery to the CPU and some of them (especially on a higher-end board) may be overspec/redundant.

I see.....

There are literally loads on the rear of the board!!

Oh, you don't mean just on the socket?

The purpose would depend where it was.
No, not near the socket. Its on the rear of the board, away from the socket area. Like i said, they are all over the rear of the board..

Very possibly, it completely depends what it does. It’s a capacitor of some sort?

I once took apart a Mac mini and cleaned it up and in the process accidentally knocked a tiny chip off the motherboard. Initially it worked ok but after a couple days it killed itself off. It must have been something to do with voltage regulation or something but will never know…
