Will it bottleneck a new 970 ?

Hi all,

I have a i7 920 @ 3.0ghz
6gb ram
Gigabyte GA-EX58 UD5 Mobo

Would the above be a bottleneck to a new 970 GPU ?

been looking at upgrading for a few weeks now and was looking at a 280x or 285 but might spend that bit extra for a 970 if the rest of the system isn't going to hold it back too much.

Thanks

I would say yes.

Reason is me and a mate ok i have a i5 3570k at 4.5ghz and a 670 2gb card i get roughly 25-35 more frames than him in arma3 in mp and he has a i7 950 i think oc to near 4ghz and a 670 4gb card. The cpu is quite weak for the latest cards imo from comparing performance between me and him in games generally.

My advice, get a more up to date cpu.

dont get me wrong, it doesnt have to a new 970, its just oh so shiney right now.

I was eyeing up a 280x or 285 before the news of the 970.

I currently have a 5850 !

a clocked 920 wont bottleneck a single card, maybe a stock 920 will but if it does it will hardly be noticeable. Get the 970 and forget the lesser graphics cards.

SkeeterUK you are talking about ARMA which is a heavy CPU (and RAM speed also helps believe it or not) game. That has nothing to do with the graphics card, that is all to do with processor.

Seriously OP dont worry about a "bottleneck" people put far to much emphasis on it! Clock the guts out of your 920, get a 970. Its a massive upgrade and well worth it man. Even if you aren't comfortable OCing the 920 it wont be holding it back often, and when it does it wont matter.

970 looks like a good fit in that case then, either way. O/C the 920 to 4Ghz then even if it does hold it back, when you get your new gear it'll be a little bit of extra performance on top

Get it - play with it - if you feel it is being held back - overclock the CPU - If it still feels like it is being held back, upgrade the mobo and CPU :)

As said o/c that cpu X58 for the most part is pretty easy i find, There is a thread in the cpu section i about cheap Hex cores for those aswell.
970 imo is a the best of the 3 cards you listed should last you awhile

I went from a i7 950 (glorified 920) and a tri-x 290 to a 4790k / 290. Noticed about - that much difference in games (as in very little!). Clocks made little difference in most games, the 290 just wasn't held back at all by the processor.

Only game that was noticeable was ARMA, and that was as posted above mostly due to Ram speed difference (1600 vs 2400) and processor improvements in the 4 years.
