I wanted to buy a 8gb dual channel kit from my local pc store. when i got there they had none. I bought 2 sticks of 4gb Vengance memory. All the details on the box seem the same. The shop assistant told me they would run in dual channel mode as they are identical but when i run CPUZ it does not show them in dual channel.

The shop assistant was basically correct. If you’ve got matched sticks you should be able to run in dual channel, it doesn’t matter if they came packaged together or separately.

If you can supply details of the hardware you’re using, and what’s plugged into where (especially with regard to the memory slots), someone may be able to help.

There is no guarantee that buying 2 single sticks of identical ram will work in dual channel configuration, but there is a good chance as it's Corsair ram(I have had issues in the past with buying single sticks for dual channel). For dual channel configuration to work they must be in the correct memory slots. Generally speaking manufacturers choose a different colour for pairs in dual channel ie. 2 blue slots and 2 black slots. If yours are like this make sure the ram is in same colours, but it may not be like that as I have seen variations where all slots are the same colour.

What motherboard do you have? Best advice I can give with the info given is to determine your exact motherboard make/model and download the manual from the manufacturers website, it will be clearly laid out in there how to configure the ram in dual channel mode. Also just for reference, cpu-z doesn't indicate dual channel for me either but i'm running dual channel so don't be too concerned. Have a look when your system boots post(black with white writing) as it may say 'dual channel mode' or similar, if not go into the bios and have a look for something confirming memory mode.

Thanks for the help. I have a Gigabyte ga-p67a-ud5. All the memory slots are black. i have put the dimms in 1 and 3.

That sounds correct.

As stated above there’s no guarantee that cpu-z is reporting correctly. If you’re lucky someone with the same board may be able to tell you if there any cpu-z reporting issues.

For completeness what version of cpu-z are you using?

I'm using cpu-z 1.57.1 and it doesn't show for me either, I suspect this is because the memory controller is now inside the cpu itself and cpu-z isn't picking it up quite right. Scratch that lol, looking at their readme sandybridge is supported.

Sounds like you are running dual channel just fine:)

Have a look here

Hey, sorry to take over this thread but I have a similar question..

I just bought some Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 from the members market. If I want 8GB in dual channel will I have to buy a whole new 8GB set in the future or can I just buy another 4GB set from OC?

Cheers

Just buy another 2 x 2GB kit of the same type. It should work with any RAM of the same spec but I think most of us would stick to the same make to be on the safe side.
