My brother inlaw has just got him self an Asus MB crossfire he's going over to intel from AMD dual but he wants to buy a 8800gt I have said heed be better of with 2900 and when the prices come down he can get the other 2900 and make use of the crossfire. but he's got it in his head that 2 8800gt will work in a crossfire MB so please will you tell him what the score is.

He can use a single 8800GTS in that board, although they're slower than the 2900XT now. So unless he has poor airflow or a less powerful PSU the 2900XT is the way to go.

With regards to multi-GPU setups, only Crossfire will work in that board (two ATi cards). SLi will NOT work (two nVidia cards). :)

best to check on the Asus website, there are boards which support both xfire and SLI, but not many.

Eh? Can't say i've ever heard of that. Unless you mean hacked drivers. ;)

thats what I wanted some else to say that only 2 ATI cards will work as crossfire, he just keeps on saying 2 nvidia cards will work.
And that is another point the PSU he has got is 500watt its a solid psu but with all the other stuff like 2 drives RAID and external usb 2 just a lot too put a 500watt psu and add possable 2 graphic cards, which will be 2900 so 500w is not going to last long before something goes bang.
His MB is only crossfire dont support both, cant say that I have heard of that.

I heard of Intel chipsets which have hacked drivers so they support SLi. As they normally support Crossfire this means they can take both.

I'm not sure if the person who released these drivers is still updating them though.
