Will Ivy Bridge processors be compatible with current 1155 mobo's?

As title.

Have been doing so much upgrading of bits and pieces lately that I may as well have gone for a full build....

Anyway, am considering getting a 1155 board and 2500k cpu, with the intention of being able to upgrade the cpu further down the line.

Intel of late have not been very good when it comes to keeping sockets, so was wondering if this was to be the case again with Ivy?

Have any Graphics Card vendors suggested what upcoming products will support PCIE/Gen 3?

And what's the expected benefit (bearing in mind that the Sandybridge platform was meant to cripple the GPU's bandwidth already (i.e no. of lanes etc) but which in reality did not really cause a problem?

Well, PCI-E 3.0 8x will have the same bandwidth as PCI-E 2.0 16x, so crippled GPU bandwidth isn't a problem.

And apparently the next generation of GPU's are to be PCI-E 3.0.

So what are these next generation of GPU's then?

I've not heard of any being announced yet? - Anyone seen any release schedules / specs etc?

It's just rumours at the moment, touted date by many is like December/January. Though people seem to be firm about PCI-E 3.0.
Couldn't really tell you much more than that tbh.

Well my P67 Sabertooth had a BIOS update for:

"1. Enable support for Next Gen 22nm Processor."

As current gen Socket 1155 CPUs (2500K/2600K etc) are 32nm, it seems very promising for both Z68 and P67 boards.

I have to admit I didn't check that for mine... and I kind of bought with a plan for an Ivy Bridge i7 ¬_¬

Huzzah! :)

(Note to self: next time check in advance!)

*edit* Holy crap that was the scariest BIOS update ever! In-Windows flash went fine, rebooted... and spent well over a minute with no display, fans on full, turning itself off and on. Seriously thought I'd bricked it :S

As did mine!

Terrifying isn't it? The flash tool really should tell you that's going to happen... By the time it actually started up I was on my knees with the side off the case looking to see if I could spot the clear CMOS jumper!

To be honest I'd be very surprised if Ivy Bridge represents enough of a performance increase to justify an upgrade, as I understand it most of its improvements will be to the integrated graphics; with that said it's always fun to have new toys so if I can get a decent price for my 2500k I may upgrade regardless.

22nm would make it nice for a little better low power usage, I remember going from a 65nm to a 45nm c2d and while the speed was pretty similar, I was able to run my CPU fan at a much lower speed and enjoy a quieter computer.

If I could get an i7 at 5.0 with fans on silent all the time, I'd be happy with that :P
