Will my 2x 4870's handle a 27" monitor for gaming?

Sorry for starting another 'What monitor shoud I buy' thread...

I currently have 2x 19" (4:3) monitors and use both of them for desktop/internet use.

I struggle with gaming when using the one monitor as these days imo games are generally written for widescreen monitors. I have Witcher 2 and the game is unplayable with my 19" 4:3.

If I purchase a 27" monitor, my thinking is that I can use it for gaming and also for desktop/internet use.

Anyone see any pitfalls? Also which one do you buy? £300 approx

I'm looking at this currently:

Are your 19" monitors 1280x1024?

A 1920x1080 monitor will have around 60% more pixels.

Crossfired 4870's might scale to a similar amount so roughly speaking you'll get the same frame rate with Crossfired 4870's at 1920x1080 as you would with a single 4870 at 1280x1024.

You'll ideally need 1GB 4870's for 1920x1080 resolution.

Yes my 19" are 1280x1024.

I mainly plan FPS so are there any disadvantages in getting a 27" monitor?

Not in games, as long as you have the graphics power to run at 1920x1080.

The dot pitch on a 27" is larger than a 24" or 22" 1920x1080 so text may appear a little more grainy.

Just to throw it out there (mainly because £300 for a TN panel 1080p monitor is highway robbery) - for an extra £75 you could get this much higher resolution, higher quality panel monitor. The high resolution won't make it any eaiser for games to run, but it has a really tiny dot pitch and would look lovely. Here is a review of the initial release.

Also, I should mention that instead of getting a 27in TN monitor you could get a 32in S-IPS TV for less money (LG 32LD450 - this post is well worth a read). The issue of pixel pitch is more pronounced, but so long as you sit a bit further away from it then it isn't an issue and the image quality is great due to the high quality panel.

I've been reading the massive thread on the new Hazro monitors on presales here at OCuk.

I'm really considering the one you recommended : Hazro HZ27WC

I only have 2x 4870's crossfire and sit quite close to my current monitors due to space restrictions. I may mount the new monitor on the wall and move the desk a bit further back.

I'm a little concerned over Hazro's background. I know the company has reformed/changed hands(probably same owners?) They are not honouring any previous warranties for the older Hazro monitors.

If your going to be wall mounting your monitor, then moving further away from it, wouldn't it be easier (&cheaper) to just get a 24" and stick it on your desk? (This is if your going to go with a 1920x1080 monitor, obviously you can't do that if you were wanting the res the Hazro gives you)

Yea, I wasn't complaining about the 2560x1440 27" screens, it's just if I was to choose between a 24" 1920x1080 screen, and a 27" 1920x1080 screen, I would choose the 24", and just sit closer, mainly because it's cheaper :P

I'm still a bit worried about my 2x 4870's not being able to handle the 2560x1440 resolution on the Hazro HZ27WC.

The lag doesnt seem to be a problem reading what others have posted or the ghosting on FPS games.....

I want the pre-order price but I also want to wait for the reviews from people here when they get theirs.......Grrr

I have a iiyama 27" HDSD it output's at full 1080p (1920x1080) and it is a good monitor. Not to mention a single 4870 can run that wonderfully.

I'm going to hit the presale I think.....you only live once...might as well have a good monitor, I'm sat in front of it long enough each day!

Lets hope that the build quality is good and if something goes wrong the RMA is in place for a replacement. I dont have much faith long term in Hazro to be honest....Lets hope it lasts 3-5yrs.....

Hey, I was looking for a 27 incher as well, but I don't really have the inclination to upgrade to a 2560 x 1440 screen!! I was wondering if you guys could offer some input and I hope you don't mind me posting in here - saves starting a new thread about the same thing to be honest.

I had it down to 4 monitors Iiyama ProLite E2710HDS/B version, HannsG HZ281HPB, Asus VE278Q/6Q & Viewsonic VX27399wm

I knocked out the hanns straight away because of this review but in particular the text "Responsiveness: fast enough for office work, but not FPS" put me off -- I'm thinking CS:S, BFBC2 etc. all the games I play are mostly FPS.

I also knocked out the Viewsonic because apparently the colours aren't calibrated properly by default, and I don't really want to spend another hundred on something else! At least not in one day. Also the weird shape put me off. I like to keep things standard.

What really swayed me was this review of the Asus. Headphone jack, simple design, accurate colours and this statement: "There's absolutely nothing to worry about when you're gaming online" is making me sway to this. It just looks really good, but is it too good to be true?

So do you guys have had any experience with this? If I'm not mistaken the VE276Q is the CCFL version of this that being the VE278Q LED has interested me, new technology, less energy (45W c/ 75W and even 55W on current 22" monitor) has got me thinking, is this the monitor right for me?

The only thing that is holding me back from a 2560 x 1440 monitor is really ~£300 budget, track record of Hazro (if I were to muster an extra £75), IPS technology so slower for games, and fear that I will have to constantly keep upgrading my pc to run the higher res so I can game (I like to keep graphics details on high + a good framerate for fps games lol). Have I answered my own question? Should I just get the Asus, when will it be in stock lol ok thanks for reading.

IMO- If budget is the main this then you should go for what you can afford as long it does what you need it to do. No good buying an expensive monitor then finding out you need a new graphics card to run the thing.

I looked at all sorts of other 27" monitors and came to the conclusion that I wanted a 2560 x 1440 res due to the 27" size. I didnt want any grainy picture as I sit close to the screen.

Agree with you that the track record of Hazro isnt good. But good on em for coming back with a great new product that gives the £700 27" monitors a run for their money. Only time will tell about the suport/RMS. They only have 1 shot left in the barrell IMO, if they mess up then its...gooodbye Hazro....

The Asus VE278Q was next best choice of 27" monitor. If thats what your card will run and you dont sit too close, and its in budget....pull the trigger!. (When its back in stock) lol
