Hello guys,

Not sure this is the right section but hey here goes.

I have a friend who's looking at buying a new pc he can get the following specs.

AMD Phenom™ X4 2.2ghz
4gig ram
1200gig hd 7200
8600gt.

Now he does a lot of video editing using power director 6. He has a single core 3.6 intel chip at the moment but it seems to lag when playing hd video in the power director.

Will the amd quad core chip run this any better? I also assume he will need to upgrade the VIDEO CARD STRAIGHT AWAY.

Phenom I is slow in most things compared to Intel but anything will be better than that P4/NetBurst heater.

He'll also need to get a new motherboard, make sure it's running AM2+. I'm using the Phenom 9950 BE, and it's not slow at all. As said, it will run a lot quicker than the Intel he's using at the moment. Chris.

That will do HD but the video card is the weakest link, maybe the CPU.

How much is he spending on it? Phenom I's and 8600 are pretty old tech now. How much is he paying for that?

Ideally I would have gone for a Phenom II X4...or you could opt for the new Athlon X2 7750 BE (its a Phenom II in disguise) and its said to be a very good CPU...in terms of GPU, you would be better off with something like the GTX260/275 or perhaps an ATI 4870 1GB.

He's spending £449 for the whole unit with vista basic 1200 gig hd a blue ray player and normal dvd/rw.

He is willing to spend about £500- £550. I did a build and got it to £530 but without the blu-ray.

He's not to worried about the hd size or the blue ray player just as long as it will run power director without lagging.

Cheers guys

Vista Basic? That wont cut it...Vista Ultimate x64 is what you need. If you use Vista Basic, there will be certain features he will need that Basic wont have...trust me either Home Premium or Ultimate...both x64...
