Hi all,

I currently have a couple of gerbils :) They are kept in the spare room at the moment which gets quite cold at night. Im worrying that in the winter its going to be really cold over night and in the day when im out at work.

I always give them loads of cardboard which they chew up and take it up to their house and tuck themselves in at night, but not sure if this will be enough.

What temperature do I need to keep them at to keep them happy this winter?

Thanks for your help
Pete

My gerbils are pretty cold too but you don't hear me crying about it, just put some thicker pants on and stop complaining!

Rodents actually cope better with cold than they do being too hot, it has to be pretty damn cold before they'll get to a hibernation state. Best thing to do is keep an eye on them, if they appear sluggish and sleep more often they may be preparing for hibernation.

If your concerned about temperature the best thing is a low intensity heat mat which you can get for reptile cages. This provides a low power, low constant heat and you'd put it under the cage. If you do get this, don't put it under the whole of the cage. Angle it so that it only covers a corner and leave it up to the gerbils to decide, if they want to sleep on top of it they'll build a nest on top of the warm bit. Conversely if they don't want the extra heat they will stay where they are.

yeah im pretty sure IRL their little paws cant grip the 50p to stick in the meter, so they make do with only 1 bar on the fire.

move the rodents to a warmer room or cover cages in blankets etc, also, google is your friend for research.
