Will My Graphics card be ok with new TFT?

Yuor card will display that resolution.

At what speed depends on what you're running. With an 8600 don't get your hopes up.

Just ordered a 20.1" TFT 1680 x 1050. Will my current Graphics card run games etc ok with the new TFT:

Geforce 8600 GT 512mb PCI-e

That card is really gonna struggle with modern games i'm afraid......some great bargains to be had in the mid-ranges at the moment if u wanna upgrade

whats the rest of your system? whats your budget ?

a 4850 is good at that resolution

A lot of people are quick to forget the 8800GT now, it was a cracking card, better cards have come out but that doesn't make it any worse, there haven't been many major game releases since the 4850/4870's came out and even though the 4850 probably has the better price/performance ratio right now, the 8800GT is cheaper and should be plenty for anyone wanting a mid-range system.

Seems like only yesterday the 8800GT meant high-end. :S

8800GT never meant high end as the 8800Ultra was faster and that was high end, then you got all the other cards coming out, now the 8800GT, Ultra etc.. are all mid end.

8800GT was and still is a great card. It will play every game (including Crysis) at 1680x1050 with high settings on most of them. For £70 to £80 it is a lot of card for the money. Just make sure you get the 512MB version.

edit: Check the for sale forums where there have been some bargains recently. There was an 8800GTX for £85 earlier today.

I think you seem to be missing that the OP has a 8600GT and not the 8800GT? I think the 8600GT may struggle at that res but it depends what kind of games youe looking at running.

I had an 8600GT and ran at 1680x1050 earlier in the year and tbh it played most things at native res pretty well without AA/AF, including COD4 and UT3. Crysis however was a big no no :p

EDIT : mine was a 256Mb DDR3 model, the DDR2 model may struggle as it has much slower RAM
