Or should i get some more plan to run a 2950x would like to save a bit for a new m2 drive.

That should work in my opinion. Planning on quad channel on the 2950x?

ram is ram so yes it will work,
you may have problem with XMP and may have to just set speed manually, older quad channel ram have a strange way for setting the speed by bumping the FSB, that's way many x99 gen CPU's would be overclocked when setting XMP on the ram

I have only just decided to look at the 2950x after the intel 9900k pricing put me off. Should i quad channel on the 2950x ?

The bios should handle the timings well, even if manual settings are required for higher frequency, tighter timings, if you are so inclined.
