Hi all,

I am in the process of upgrading my PC:

Hyper 480W Type R

Asus P5N32-E PLUS SLi nForce (Socket 775)
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB GDDR3
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz
2x36Gb Western Dig Raptors (Raid-0)
1xBenq Dvd
1xAsus CD/RW 52x
Thermaltake Tsunami case

Ive asked about on other forums and they think my psu will be fine for the rig, however BFG recommend 500W + psu.

Any advice from someone in the know. will be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
Chris.

if it was any other brand of PSU maybe, but Hiper could be cutting it fine

what does it say on the PSU as the real output in watts?

 Damn, thats not what i wanted to hear - but thanks.
What would you recommend, are Enermax any good?

Ill have to check Will, i think the +12v is 21a

Welcome to the forums, how old is the PSU? The reason I ask is that they get less efficient with age. It should just about cope but Hiper 580w Type-Rs have got a bit of a reputation for being dodgy, the 480w I haven't heard so much about but then they sold in much smaller quantities.

As for the 500w+, it isn't strictly necessary as companies put in those ratings to cover themselves in case someone decides to try a 400w generic PSU that will only provide 300w actual power. :)

//edit Antec, Corsair, Enermax, Tagan and Seasonic are all worth considering for the PSU.

On my Antec Truepower the max wattage it provides is 535w even though it is 550w PSU, it should say something similar on the Hiper.

Thanks for all your rapid responses.
The PSU is around 1.5 years old...Ive just found the real output parameters:
Rated Wattage 480 Watts
Peak Load 530 Watts

Output Parameter +5V
2.0A - 32A
+12V 1
0.2A - 18A
+12V 2
0A - 16A
-12V
0A - 0.8A
+5VSB
0 - 2.5A
+3.3V
0.4 - 28A

EDIT: Williamw11 you just put my mind at rest mate, thanks.
Thankyou all for your help...

I would'nt go too much on those details. It is well known that Hipers (especially the 580) cannot output their stated wattage. A 580w only outputs 360w on the 12v rails so yours must be even less. Forget about the peak wattage as well. It will never get near that. I would seriously consider getting a decent psu such as a Tagan, Corsair, Seasonic, OCZ etc.

I would be a lot more worried if it was a 580w. We don't seem to hear much about any of the other specs so the 480w cant be anywhere near as bad as its big brother.
To be honest for a system like yours I wouldn't risk it as a permanent solution. Get yourself a seasonic/ corsair/ antec in my experience (and also tagan/ enermax)
