Hey guys, just a quick question before I decide to take the plunge and buy a new graphics card.

Do you think my 430w True Power Antec PSU will handle the 1900xt? I don't have much connected to it really: 1 optical drive, 1 hard drive, 1 floopy disk drive, no extras cards ect. Currently running it on a 3700+ and 2gb of geil value ram. Solid as a rock with this setup, just hoping the beefy 1900xt doesn't change that.

Thanks :)

You should be on the limit with your PSU. I think they do recommened you having a 400w PSU. It depends on your situation, if you afford a new PSU I would suggest one IMO :)

7900GTX 90w vs x1900xt 125w?

28%, The truepower has 2 x 17A rails 2.9A/35w isn't going to make a lot of difference. Unless the PSU is on the edge to start with.

GTX costs more though. :)

x1900 xtx cheapest here at overclock £360

7900 gtx £380

20 quid in it and he wouldn't need a new psu ;)

if he gets the zalman for the x1900 to remain sane thats even more cost ;)

That power supply will be fine with a X1900XT. It has strong 12v rails so it will be able to feed the card.

Just to add none of the 7900GTX's under £400 are in stock here at ocuk so if you want a card asap and want to shop here then the X1900XT is going to be your best option.

Power Consumption Chart

Geforce 7900GTX 89watts
Geforce 7900GT 64 watts
Geforce 7800GTX 512 128 watts
Geforce 7800GTX 99 watts
Geforce 7800GT 73 watts
Geforce 7600GT 51 watts
Geforce 6600GT 48 watts

Radeon X1900XTX 135 watts
Radeon X1800XT 113 watts
Radeon X1800XL 70 watts

"There is quite a significant drop in power consumption. With our 3D Mark tests, the 7900GTX did not even consume up to 100w of heat. In fact the new flagship card of NVIDIA consumes 50% less power than the ATi's X1900XTX equivalent."

According to this review its a bit more

i reckon you'll be alrite mate with the x1900, probably just outside the dodgey area. youre running an amd so thats fairly low power requirements. im sure i saw someone with a web-based article showing what power you require, ill try and find it via search.

urgghh every post your in easyrider with the 7900 and x1900 involved, you seem to be defending the 7900 series. my friend has a x1800xt and i take it that thyre the same fan as on the x1900 and the fan really isnt an issue imo - lol put some music on if it bothers you that much.

Nowt wrong with a preference to nvidia cards. I prefer them, others I know swear by the Ati cards. Everyone has their own views on any given subject. I confess to hating the 7900GT fans. My m8 said it dont bother him, but he is a deaf bleeder anyway ;)

Hi there again;

http://www.extreme.outervision.com

I calulated the following:

4000+ stock @ 100% utilization
2 sticks of RAM
ati x1900 (not oc or xtx variant)
1 SATA hd
1 dvd drive
1 floppy
1 sound card
3 usb devices
1 modem
2 x120mm fans 1 x 92mm fan

= 342 w

Cant comment on the reliability of this site, so take it with a pinch of salt.

EDIT: have not included capactior or surge deficates

eXtreme PSU Calculator v1.3

That should give you a rough idea of how much your system uses in terms of watts at peak performance.

My spec listed below uses 520W peak thats taking into consideration 1) 100% PSU peak utilization, 2) 25% surge compensation, 3) 20% capicitor aging. Dual core, crossfire/sli uses a lot more, your looking at upto 750W.

same performance but uses 50% less power

Sigh,

89/135 = 34% or
89/0.5 = 178w

Try this

I have this PSU, I was thinking the same thing. However I have 2 raptors and 2 other hd, 2Gig of RAM, an 4400 and an DVD writer. Do you think that this PSU can take a x1900xt-x? I was going to get a 600w PSU. I want there to be a desent amount of power spare, I fear that if I didn't get a new PSU I would be border line.

yes

350 quid on a gfx card and not have a decent psu is madness imo.

The PSU is the most important part of any system.

Maybe you should look at a 7900 GTX a far better card in noise and power and heat terms.

Hey dood....are you an NVidia salesman or somethin...that five times youve put that...you must be on a percentage...hehe.

They are also a bit more expensive. The ATI are not much louder than the nvidia's and becasue the sock cooler blows the heat out the case..the so what if the card runs 5 degress hotter. I had 7800GTX and went to X1900 XT-X (for 300quid) and havent noticed much differenece in terms of temps and noise.

Hell...if you want an ATI...buy one. you wont be disapointed...and the image quality is absolutely superb (I think its better than NVidia's...and I'm an Nvidia fan)
