Will my SIM work in my new 4S?

Hey guys,

Just a quick question. I have a pay monthly phone contract with Orange at the moment which lasts another year but I fancy a phone upgrade, so I thought I may aswell keep the phone I currently have in a drawer or something, and go out and buy an iPhone 4S (which I've wanted for some time) and just put the SIM into it.

Obviously I would have to get busy with a pair of scissors and turn it into a Micro-SIM but will it work? E.g. the SIM won't be locked to the specific phone (which I doubt because the phone was sealed in it's own case with the SIM separate) and I'll still be able to use my iPhone just as if it was my old one?

I've just seen lots of things about the phone having to activate the SIM and lock it to the phone etc. so the phone would only be able to use on Orange for that point onwards or something like that, I'm not sure.

Don't want to whop out for an iPhone then find out my SIM won't work with it xD

Thanks in advance guys.

Provided it's a micro SIM or you cut your full sized SIM, yes.

Make sure to buy from Apple rather than buying one on payg from Orange. Also I take it that you have a data plan already?

As said, I have a pay monthly contract at the moment, which lasts for 1 more year. So yeah, I have the SIM and it has allowances, unlimited texts, 300 minutes, 500MB internet (I never use it, I have BT Openzone access).

Just wanted to know if cutting down the SIM would work, or do I need to request a new SIM entirely from Orange (which I doubt they'll do from research) because I hear a cut down SIM doesn't sometimes work properly.

Cut down SIM isn't a problem provided that it is cut properly (and not by some moron at a small repair shop who refers to a cutter as a "machine"...but that's another story). I'd pick a cutter off the 'bay, and ensure that the chip is given plenty of space before cutting, or use the template from giffgaff here. Bit of sanding to smooth the edges, and using a mildly damp cloth to wipe off any plastic dust, and you'll have no problems whatsoever.

Of course, if there is an option to order with Orange, then that's the way I'd go.

When I switched to using a phone that only had a micro-SIM slot, I just called my provider (Three) and they sent me a free replacement micro-SIM bound to my PAYG account and a free plastic micro-SIM to full-size SIM adapter, just in case I wanted to use the SIM in a phone that only takes full-size SIMs.

What should I say if I call up?

"Hi, I have a pay monthly phone contract with yourselves but I have wanted to upgrade my phone at my own discretion and I was just wondering if it would be possible for you to send me out a Micro-SIM with the same number, contract, allowances etc. in replacement of my full sized SIM with no changes to the current contract price or plan." ?

All you have to do is say you would like to be sent a micro-sim because you are now going to be using it in an iPhone 4S. You don't have to go into all that detail saying to keep the number the same, the contract the same, etc. You don't have to have a guilty conscience about not using the phone you got with the contract. If they start offering you this that and the other to recommit and extend the contract then just be firm and say no you just want the micro-sim.
