Will powerline networking work out to a garage?

I'm looking at setting one of our olde machines up in the garage for notes/printing/reference and the all important ventrillo:p

Would any of the powerline kits work?
The garage is powered via an armoured cable (about 40-50 foot) from the house on it's own circuit from the household fuse box.

I could probably run a network cable if needed, but as the power cable is there already it would save some mucking around :)

shouldn't see why not, it's on the same main circuit. possibly get reduced sync/throughput but for ease seems to be no problem at all!

I've got a homeplug working in the shed, it's probably 60ft from the house through a separate RCCB :)

Cheers, I've never used powerline before, or even looked at it seriously hence the question (especially as they state it should be on the same ring etc).

I've ordered a pair of D-link 200mbs adaptors, which if they work to the garage will be great, if they don't they should let me move my secondary access point much closer to the garage. either way it should make things easier :) (I only need maybe 5-10mbs fairly reliably, as it's just for ventrillo, browsing and youtube videos for painting tips etc).

I've always wondered how well they work. I've used one set at my gf's. But unfortunately they wouldn't work across their old wiring and new wiring for their extension.

I don't know much about wiring, but my dad was wondering if it would work in our house because we have seperate loops. So reading this thread, my understanding is that if they share the same circuit, or are all looped up to the main fuse board it should be fine? They have serperate RCCBs, but from what mrgrubby says, they should still work.

I've just had a couple delivered at home and will get back with my findings. I vaguely remember trying my old set, but I think my downfall was that I was trying through a power strip too.

I have come across a few houses that wont let you do them from upstairs to downstairs.

I cannot work out why unless the supply is on different rings

As a side-note I have a pair of Belkin ones and they worked just fine when we used them through a 50 meter reel.

I should find out later today if they'll work to the garage :)

On a related note, I took the laptop out last night to do some labelling (we're on a big push to sort and tidy up out there*), and was surprised that the external wireless adaptor we got free from VM picked out our booster router/AP - at about 20% signal strength.

Hopefully the powerline things will work though :)

*We've got hundreds of tools, and different types of screws etc, but little idea where many of the smaller ones (and some large ones) are.

Well, the powerline adaptors arrived.

I was a bit worried when with the adaptors sat next to each other the speed was just 160mbs, and with one in the living room it was 130mbs.
But with one in the garage, and one by the router/switch the speed between them is 70mbs which is more than fast enough :)

Next up for project "get the garage online" is to reinstall an old Dell I was given, and pick up a suitable bracket :)
