Will the MAC OS run off any laptop and not just a 'Apple Mac Computer'?

I do find it funny how this topic barred from the forum, yet gaming the HE store (essentially fraud) is no problem and rampant :)

I'd rather both were allowed, but at least have some consistency.

To be fair, pretending to be a HE student is Apples fault for not checking, actually breaking some terms and conditions on OS X by installing on unofficial hardware is a bit more clear cut :)

Apple can and will start checking student IDs if they so choose, until that day :D Discount galore :p

The online HE store presents plenty of terms and conditions. I don't know how things stand on lying over the phone or in person, though.

So what? Everything has T&Cs and EULAs that nobody cares about. Why does Apple's carry so much weight with OcUK?

No, it's not possible to run OS X on any laptop. There are many which won't and some which will, not all of which are manufactured by Apple.

It just does, ask a Moderator or email them, I don't know why.

Any talk of piracy, or circumvention of any kind of software is banned on the forum.

As for accessing the HE store.. lying over the phone is bad, but there are links available that give you direct access to it. Both of which Apple could prevent, but chose not to :o

What difference does that make as to the "legality" of it? The one and only official entrance to the HE store has an academic IP gateway on it and it's clearly signposted throughout who is permitted to use it.

Not so, I have access to the HE store via weblink.

No proxy changes, no special changes, just a link.. which is why I said "they could" change it, to force authentication ;)

Some URL from after the gateway check that's passed around isn't an official entrance. I know exactly what you mean - I made a note of such a URL before I finished uni.

That argument really doesn't stand up - just as cirumcumventing copy protection (or artificial constraints, in the case of OS X) "because it is possible" doesn't.

Again - I'm not saying I personally disapprove of either. Just that the forum has no consistency.

The Dell Mini 9 is (so far) one of the easiest laptops to put OS X -not MAC OS - on. However, this breaks the Apple EULA and makes you look like a complete cheapskate.

OS X is only half (or two thirds) of the Apple experience. Pony up the money (second hand if need be) otherwise your first experience of OS X won't be great. Oh and nobody likes to look like a cheapskate do they? ;)

They could put annoying activation into every bit of Apple software they make (including OS X) but they don't. Still doesn't mean you can legally install a single user license on as many Macs as you want, just because you decide to ignore the licence.

If you're not in higher education and you're buying a Mac with the HE discount, you're breaking the law. No matter which way you justify it you are, at least admit it.

This probably sounds quite hypocritical but it's meant in an "admit what you're doing" way not "I wouldn't do the same thing" :p It's interesting though how many people won't pay full retail price...

Although despite the legality I do think Apple deserve it if they're going to use marketing like below (in an everyone mass mailing):
