Hi

Having owned a 1st gen apple tv and couldn't get used to the closed nature of IOS I'm wondering if the next generation being released will be worth buying?

I own apple products for their simplicity over android which is far too involved for me (i owned a galaxy S6) where i liked the unlimited nature of the OS and tried some autoapps for home automation but i think it was a little more advanced than i needed it to be.

I like the idea of the ihome kit that will be released in the future and its compatibly with hardware already out there in the market and I'm wondering how well this will tie in with home av equipment given the nature of apple and their closed down OS.

Anyone been looking into this also?

I think the answer depends on whether you're an Apple devotee with money to burn, living in the US and with no interest in 4K ;)

If you don't want a closed OS then don't get an Apple TV. There are a ton of media streamers out there and also if you're going to be upgrading your TV soon then this may also affect your decision.

Amazon, Android, Apple, etc. all have something out. You can get a HP micro-server or such like and use that if you wanted a Windows based device and you can install Plex, Kodi, etc. on there to have a full, future proof, media center.

Amazon Fire TV is OOS atm in the US + UK, New version could be out soon, But I am wanting a media streamer also for Netflix etc.
