Just wondering if Sony will ever release another 60Gb+ PS3 with the software support for backwards compatibility? I doubt Ill play that many PS2 games, but Ill miss my GT and Tekken games. Real shame they tried to cheapen the PS3 by removing the PS2 hardware for the EU model...

Also how well considered is the PS3 for BD? I know a lot of people are moving to it and this is obviously a killer app for me - so much so Ill probably get a 40" Full HDTV to complement it...

I maybe a new PS3 owner in the next few months...

ps3ud0

Why not use a PS2?

They have to draw the line somewhere, I for one dont play any of my old PS2 games and I would much prefer them to focus on this gen than wasting time and money gettin the old gen to work

Dont know for sure, maybe if Sony bring a the MGS4 pack over to the UK in June, the normal edition (ie not the 40GB gun metal one) is a 80Gb with a DS3 and PS2 software emulation. Ive only ever played MGS3, FF12 and gow2 on my PS3 since last year, and two of those was just to see the up scaling.

It's a shame I play ZOE2 and MGS3 now and again as they're timeless classics in my opinion. Maybe if there's demand they'll introduce say what the Americans have with the 80gig.

Though really in the end if you want proper backwards compatibility you can pick up the new slimlines for less than £60.

Ease of use. I love the fact my wii has a built in gamecube. Just plug in my Wavebird and i have access to my entire Gamecube collection. My Tv has got so many connections i have lost count but even still the faffing about with controllers, memory cards etc is just a Pita and totally defeats the purpose of the console with it's pick up and play style. All i have to do is turn my wavebird on, insert desired gamecube disk into my wii and i am away. If only they had a N64 cart socket built in i would be in heaven!

Im sure people who previously owned a PS2 would want the same with their PS3. I mean Nintendo can do it for £180 in a console the size of a old VCR case so why can't sony do it with their PS3? After all when the PS2 first launched it was one of the main things Sony praised about it's console.

Thats easy, nintendo sell their wii console at a price higher than it costs them to make(the wii is not a technically impressive console afterall), they make money off of every one sold. This is not the case with sony who still arent breaking even(?) with every ps3 console sale. It really has nothing to do with room, sony just needs to cut costs

i made a big point of getting a 60GB PS3 for my back catalogue. Really shouldnt have bothered, i havent played a single PS2 game :|

i have used the card readers a few times tho

They tried it, then realised customers would rather have a cheaper console with no backwards compatibility than an expensive console with it.

They may bring one out later when they come to revise it but i doubt it. Maybe they will look at doing it as a USB add on or something? i dunno, but that would probably be just as expensive as a full blown PS2.

Except the gamecube is the Wii pretty much.

I did originally think that a fully featured model would be introduced back into the market sometime at a later date, possibly an 80gb equivalent of the old 60gb model. Since we've not heard anything for some time now, I'm starting to wonder if they will ever bother.

I was wondering this as well until someone pointed out the cost of a PS2 they are cheap as chips.

I'd prefer sony spend time with the PS3 than wasting time on backwards compatibility

I'll be a little frustrated if they reintroduce backwards compatability in a new model at the same price as a 40gig. It's actually quite an important feature for me, for example games like odin sphere have only just come out in the UK and i've been waiting for that for ages, i would have happily forked out for a 60gig if they were available in the shops, but they weren't and for sony to pull a sku and then reintroduce it without any warning in the past is what would frustrate me

It wouldn't surprise me if they are able to crack the full PS2 software emulation at some point in the future. I know this was they're original aim, so maybe it's just delayed rather than binned???
