Will the PS3 40GB support PS2 games?

no idea, but I think according to wiki that the 60Gb bnd 80GB versions offer software emulation. So there should be no reason why it isn't possible on the 40GB version.

No, it has the emulator chip taken out so I dont think there is anything that can be done to make a PS2 game play on it

Indeed.

Maybe would work if there was work done to the PS2 game software to work on PS3 hardware but it probabilly would take a while to do that.

Think it uses software and hardware emulation, the 40gb has the Emotion engine and PS2 GPU removed. So i presume unless the old game is ported to the PS3 then it cant be played

The US 80GB model is the same as the EU 60GB models (mostly software emulated), the only consoles to have FULL HARDWARE emulation were the original US 20/60GB models.

So in summary, if PS2 games and high compatibility are important to you then buy a PS2. :p (or try to source one of the original US 20/60GB models and import all your PS2 games)

As far as I know the 40GB model will never have BC because it has had all hardware removed including the rather vital GS synthesizer chip (included in EU 60, US 80) which cannot be emulated, since it has more memory bandwidth than PS3 does.

The original US and JAP PS3's had both the PS2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesisor combined in a single chip on the motherboard, giving near full hardware compatiblity of the PS2.

The 60GB UK/European PS3's had only the Graphics Synthesisor in silicon, with the Emotion Engine being emulated in software by the Cell processor. So a mix of hardware and software emulation is used to achieve the PS2 backwards compatiblity

The current 40GB have had the Graphics Synthesisor removed too, so no PS2 backwards compatibility at all.

I think that in the future, Sony may pull a rabbit out of its hat and eventually enable PS2 emulation on the 40GB consoles. The Xbox 360 can emulate Xbox games solely through software emulation - so I am fairly sure that the PS3 could at least do the same for PS2 games which are not quite as demanding as Xbox games (no vertex shading is one example). Sony has been saying for quite a long time that their 'Cell' chip is supposed to be extremely powerful, yet this inconsistency in software emulation capabilities across the consoles hasn't been answered.

Yeah I reckon software emulation (100% software) might come out in the future, not particularly bothered but would be a pretty neat update.
