will the ps3 play R4 dvds?

Hi,
Does anyone know if the ps3 will play R4 dvds?

Dont think so mate, from EU PS3 FAQs

The PAL PLAYSTATION®3 system, available throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East is compatible with movies on Region 2 DVD Video discs and the PAL PS3™ available in Australasia, is compatible with Region 4.
Region 2 covers DVD Video discs released in Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland. Region 4 covers DVD Video discs released in Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico).

It might, most Region 2 players do play 4 from my experience!

unless they are multi region players it's most likely due to the way a lot of "R4" DVD's are actually R2/4 (I very much doubt the PS3 is region free for DVD's).
Because the Aus market is relatively small and they use the same video system as us a lot of studios make the disks with dual coding when they have the rights in both countries (it means they can either just ship masters over to Aus for replication, or replicate with the R2 disks and send them over).

How silly of me, forgot I could test it myself.

My Spiderman 1 DVD says Region 4, no mention of 2 and that plays in my PS3 fine. :D

if you want to know what the disk actually is, you can bung it in the PC and run PowerDVD and look under the disk information when it's playing back:)
It's surprising the number of R2EU and R4 Aus disks that state they are just R2 or R4 on the packaging, but are actually dual coded when you look at the disk information under PowerDVD etc.

Why do they region lock the PS3? it pains me as I have a lot of R1 dvds that I can't play on it, will this ever change?

It will never change, unless someone creates a PS3 version of DVD region X, or something like it.

They have to region lock the player, as it's required by the DVD specification. Granted, they could have made it region 0, but even then, some discs wouldn't play as they check that the player is set to a specific region.

it's required by the dvd spec, but also under Australian law is illegal if memory serves....i'm still not sure how the ps3 gets round that in aus (most players have to be sold either pre modified or with instructions on how to overcome it).
