Will these be happy with each other?

Not without a cooler since that's an OEM Q6600. Add in a Arctic Freezer 7 pro or a Tuniq Tower 120 or just get the retail version.

Also I would just go for the PC6400 version of ballistix since it's essentially the same as the 8500 kit.

depends on what case your using i would go for the tuniq tower over the freezer pro 7,i swapped my pro7 for the tuniq and it dropped my temp's down by 10c....amazing cooler
 
Should be fine as long as you have a decent cooler. You might want to go for one of the Gskill 4GB (2x2GB) kits that are on this week only as some boards are fussy about having four sticks inserted. It would be cheaper too.
