Will they post without a house number?

I need to post something to a residential address, however I don't know the actual house number. I know everything else including the postcode, and the recipient has a very distincive surname, but without the house number will they just chuck it in a bin at the sorting office?

I've exhausted all other ways of finding the house number, short of driving there and posting it myself (an option, but a 90mile round trip which I'd rather avoid).

Stick a return to address on the back just in case, but with luck it should get through no problem. It depends on the sorting office at their end, ultimately.

Edit: Pudney, it designates a section of street, yes. My road has 200 + houses on it and about 8 postcodes.

Yeah the postcode could be the whole section of a street, will be kind of hard to tell which house its for, the only way they would know is if you put a "name" then they might be able to look at the other letters in the bag for that postcode and try and match the name with some letters for the same house.

However then again the house may not have letters that day, and it may get returned back to the sorting office.

Doesn't a postcode just identify a street?
It does yes, but if the letter gets to the postman's bag and he's on this street, he'll know exactly which house it needs to go to as the recipient has a distinctive surname and he'll stick the letter with any other post addressed to this person.

However, it has to go through the sorting office before it gets into his bag, and they might not be so understanding.

Around here it's hit and miss even if you have the right house number, a couple of times I have got post for a guy who lives on the other side of town (with a totally different postcode).

I live at 16 Royd Avenue, he lives on 16 Royd Lane - that's the only similarity, we live in a different village with a different postcode. Stupid Royal Mail.

But on topic, where we used to live we got things delivered even when they were addressed wrongly (old people sending Xmas cards etc) - but that's because he'd been our postman for years and knew all the surnames etc. It really depends on their postman.

Can you not get in contact with whoever you're sending it to and ask them what their house number is?

I am sure it will be fine with a name, just put a note on the front saying "Not sure of house number" and put a return address.

Pretty sure it will get delivered
