My dad's current business PC has the following spec:
Intel Pentium 4 Socket 478 Prescott 3.0GHz
Abit IC7 Max 3
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Antec Super Lanboy case
X-Pro 400W PSU
2x 250GB Western Digital Caviar drives in RAID0
52x CDROM/RW
512MB GeiL dual channel DDR
(can you tell it's one of my old desktop machines?)
Recently it's started (intermittently) making a fairly loud noise that clearly isn't right and is best described as a vibration, similar to how a wire caught in a fan might sound (but as far as I can tell it's not a wire caught in a fan).
My suspicion is that it's the bearing in the power supply fan on the way out but I can't confirm it. For that reason and because he'd quite like something "a little bit faster", I'm thinking that given how much a new power supply would cost it may actually just be worth getting an entirely new machine, namely the OcUK Primo Nova - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-273-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat=, upgraded to 2GiB of RAM and a 500GB drive, with Windows 7 Home Premium.
So my questions are:
1) Would it be faster than the current setup for general office use? (mainly Word/Publisher and web browsing). If not, would it be any worse, or roughly the same? (bear in mind the current system runs Windows XP Pro but the new one would be on Windows 7).
2) Assuming it would perform better, do you think replacing it with a Primo Nova would be a reasonable thing to do? (the description says it's passively cooled which is a plus; I recently cleaned out the current system and this is what it looked like: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18007934&postcount=30)
Cheers,
Mr. Brightside
