Fitting a higher spec P4 than the mobo will support. For example a 3.2 Prescott in a Dell mobo that currently has a 1.9ghz 400fsb P4 installed? I only want to check the higher spec CPU works and it is much easier to swop CPUs in my old Dell GX260 then my main rig. Would it damage the CPU or the mobo and will Windows actually start?

1.9 could be Socket 423, definetly not gonna work. If its a 1.9 478 Williamette its likely the board might not support higher FSB cpus, and if it does, nothing over 533FSB since its likely an older board. Also note that even recent motherboards had issues with Prescott support since it takes a significant bit more power draw than previous PIV cpus. Chances are slim in your case that'll it even POST since the BIOS will have no idea what to make of a Prescott cpu and i doubt it was ever upgraded to do so seeing the age of it. If it did POST it would'nt do any immediate damage no.

Done this with my 2nd pc had a 1.7 willamatte in a Gigabyte 533fsb board, Put my 3ghz 800fsb Northwood in & it sits happily at 2.4ghz no higher though!

I have no idea if it will damage anything but it seems to be happy :)

The Dell mobo is Socket 478 so no problem there  All I want to do is check the CPU is working ok before going to the hassle of putting it in my main rig where the HSF is quite fiddly to remove!! Just don't want to blow anything up :)

So sounds like a Northy not gonna cause a problem but its a Prescott I want to check. Can anyone confirm if this will be ok in the GX260 mobo - just don't want to blow anything up having just had my sons Ashdown bass amp blow!!

Thanx Justin. Installed the 2.8 533 CPU I bought off you in my 2nd PC, replaced a 1.9 400, and its working fine. Currently running Prime 95 stress test 4hrs so far with no problems.
