I am trying to resolve multiple network problems in my parents house they have had over the years and wanted to know peoples thoughts first?

The issues at the moment are:
  • Poor wireless signal (router in corner of licing room)
  • Multiple Powerline adapters conflicting.
  • Old Wireless router that crashes a lot
  • Torrents killing the whole network

So my plan was to.. Buy a new Router Linksys E3200 and QoS all the torrent packets. Move the router to a central house position, using a new set of powerline adapters but im not sure if i can do this:

Wall > Virgin Medium Modem > Powerline adapter ------(upstairs)------ > Upstairs Powerline Adapter > Router > Powerline Adapter LAN2 -------(outer building office)-------------> Powerline adapter LAN2 > Computer(s)

My question is can i have a powerline adapter from the modem to the router and then another from the router to the outhouse were we have a small office??

Otherwise i have to run long cables round the house which might be a pain :(

Assuming the connections you want to make with the powerlines work on standard Ethernet then there is no reason you cannot extend them using powerlines.

Personally, I would keep the Router next to the modem, and powerline out to a Wireless AP in a central location. That or use a WiFi enabled powerline.

Forgive my stupidity will the accesspoint need any clever setup to extend my wireless? or does it show up as a whole new network SSID? with its own password etc?

As that might be easier.

I currently have TPlink AV200 adapters.. (4 of them and i hear mixing brands is bad idea?) Any wifi powerline adapters you could recommend.

Can setup an AP however you want.

If you want a separate SSID it's possible. The Wireless protocols seamlessly allow you to 'extend' a wireless network simply by using the same SSID, encryption type and key. It will even work on different channels (And it's recommended to avoid channel congestion).

I'm not in a position to recommend any powerline adapters as I have never personally used any. I am sure some others hear will be able to recommend however.

Thanks for the help.. ive found a TP-Link powerline Wireless N extender so that should be perfect at the top of my stairs and hopefully the whole house will be covered in lovely internet.
