Basically I've got around a £1000 budget for a new gaming laptop and I've been having a look around. So far I've found a HP Pavilion dv7 which seems to be okay. But how will it handle the new games (Battlefield 3, Skyrim etc?) Id like to be able to run them on at least high setting without much lag. If you don't think this laptop will be sufficient for high performance gameplay can you please suggest one (as near to my budget as possible) that will. Thanks. Oh and before anyone suggests getting a desktop, I will also be using this for university so portability is a must. Anyway here are the specs:

With that budget you are both better off building a desktop for gaming or you will need to buy a laptop with a Nvidia GTX 570m or GTX 580m, AMD 6970m or 6990m to play BF3 and any new game on it. All other mobile GPUs will not really do, unless you like watching a flip book type animation. If you are after a gaming laptop you need to save a bit more money, I purchased one today the Samsung 700G7A-502UK as advertised at top of this page for £1400 and that is about as low as you are going to get for a decent gaming laptop with a single GPU. If you have a desktop and really after gaming, I would think about updating your desktop first or build one if you dont have one then think about a gaming laptop or buy a cheap laptop for mobile use only but not for gaming and have a desktop for the gaming. They are very expensive gaming laptops that will actually play at decent frame rates the latest games.

Just out of interest, can you change the casing on a 17xr3? Like the shell at the back of the screen?

not sure dont think so as it has a custom lid, tbh i have only seen them in the shops not really paid too much attention up until a few days ago. I should have the machine in a couple of days once i have checked i will let you know

Also I don't like the idea of shifting my desktop to the living room when I want to game on the Plasma screen and to me a gaming laptop is just a very powerful laptop and that is why I went for one, I need the power of a desktop but be able to move it easily.
