My gf's brother has just come home with some hardware and he's bought a 300 watt PSU to power it....will it be ok??

Foxconn A690VM2MA mobo
ATI X850XTPE Gfx card
AMD 64 x2 4600+ Doal-Core CPU
1gig ram
2x DVD RW
2x HDD (IDE)

The psu says:

300W PSU Designed for ATX 12V and SFX 12V

Will this be ok??

Also will this mobo run IDE drives? I can see one slot but it says PIDE and looks longer (maybe?) than IDE. The rest looks to be SATAII

/edit just checked and the PIDE slot is the same connection as IDE but will it run the same drives? never head of PIDE.

Cheers,

G

The P probably just means parrallel? I doubt that psu will cope, my current system is on a similar psu and it struggles badly.

got him a 500 watt psu instead, BUT the bloody ram doesn't fit in his new mobo, the notch for DDR is a tiny bit different from the DDR2 so he's off to get some more ram 1st thing in the morning.

Why didnt you first try using the 300W PSU before assuming that it wouldnt work?

I presume you need DDR1 and not DDR2? He seems to have a gone for a very old motherboard. Still, its just an inconvenience as you will get it sorted out in the morning.

Nah he has DDR1 but now needs DDR2 for the new mobo.

We didn't try it incase it messed up and took anything with it.

But he found the 500 watter for £5 more than the 300 so I figured better safe than sorry?

OIC.

Fair enough.

£5 isnt too bad, though a PSU that cant power a system wont blow up or have enough spare power to blow up your other components.
