Will this PSU run this set up?

Firstly I have to apologise as I have no experience in building a p.c, all I have done in the past is upgraded my graphics and the odd reformat now and then, so please bear with me, as I am getting old.

I am going to be upgrading my p.c in the next few weeks, but I have concerns about the psu I have in my current system. Is it powerful enough run it.

I will be buying this bundle (unless somebody can recommend another).

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-040-OK&tool=3

This will be coupled with my existing equipment,

7800 GTX
X-FI Elite Pro.
160 GB Maxtor

The case has 3 fans in it 1. 60mm 1. 92mm and a 120mm exhaust.
I will keep my current HDD and do a reformat after fitting the new parts.

I will be going to overclock both the GFX card and CPU to get the most out of the system.

Considering I have no experience whatsoever in building my own p.c are there any pitfalls involved with this set up I need to be aware of?.

The psu is connected to my existing board with (I think) a 4 pin power connector and a 24 pin multiplug, will these both have to be connected to the Gigabyte DS3?.

Could somebody please point me in the right direction for various BIOS settings I need to adjust before the reformat.

Thanks in advance.

That PSU will be fine, you will need both the 24pin and 4pin plug attached. It is pretty simple to build a PC now so just take your time and remember that you shouldn't have to force parts in. There are a few threads in the Motherboards sub-forum that are about the DS3 so you may well find settings in there. :)

first time i built a pc i read and read and read about what to watch out for and what to do.

once the hardware came and i had to do it it felt pretty heavy at first, but i figured it all out as i went along (although see trying to get some of these connections onto the pins!!!!!), and when i finished and hit the power button it booted fine.

i'm sure you will be the same. if you have a spare pc have it next to you and connected to the net so you can google for info if you need it.

by the way i am doing a build tomorrow night and as usual i am nervous in case it doesn't post (start properly) after the build, but my last 2 have so here's hoping this one will be the same.

good luck. :D

Thanks for that reply mate.

I have a couple more questions to ask.

1. When I have finally installed all the hardware and boot it up will my cd drive be recognised by the motherboard (IDE Sony) as the only disc supplied with the mobo is in cd form. Which steps do i need to take if it's not recognised?

2. Also will my Maxtor HDD (SATA) be detected also? and what steps do i need to take to rectify it.

3. There seem to be several SATA sockets on the DS3 which one do I plug the HDD into?

Sorry for the noob questions, but I am new to this.

Thanks in advance.

it will be recognised. i've never yet had to install drivers for a dvd or cd drive whether is was ide or sata.

Also will my Maxtor HDD (SATA) be detected also? and what steps do i need to take to rectify it.

depends really. my old mobo required me to insert a floppy and press f6 during windows installation (or any other time when i was booting from cd) and then select and install the correct driver from the floppy. this is very easy to do, but you obviously need the floppy driver. see if one came with your machine or mobo, and if not go to the manufacturers website (the mobo manufacturer) and see if you can download the driver.

on the other hand the machine i['ve just built doesn't need the drivers installed from floppy. they must be included on the mobo or something (in the bios?? i dunno).

<edit> i just read your original post again, and with that mobo i think you will not need a floppy to install drivers. could be wrong but i expect you'll be ok. anyway, if it needs a floppy it will be supplied.

3. There seem to be several SATA sockets on the DS3 which one do I plug the HDD into?

doesn't really matter. it will work anyway. if you have a mobo diagram (or if you can find the manual online it will tell you which is connector 1, 2, etc, but don't worry about it.
