I currently have a netgearWGR614 and whilst it is great for browsing the web it is pretty much useless for gaming, when trying to find servers on any online games it throws up about 4-10 then freezes,

I would like to keep the WGR614 as this run my wireless network for the laptop/phone etc but I was wondering if I could have my gaming pc connected to an ethernet switch, which then went into the router,

terrible diagram below :-

Would the router work in this configuration or would it need to be directly connected to the modem?

Thanks

That won't work. Your best bet is to get a new router.
the modem can only be on the same network as one other machine becasue it assigns an IP address from your ISP. You can have the modem directly connected to the PC (make sure you have a firewall installed), and game that way. Try that to confirm it's actually the router that's the problem.

Could you not put the router where the switch is in your diagram?

Im not sure the router is your problem

I know it is the router as it works fine when connected directly to the modem, this isn't practical though as other people in the house use wireless all the time.

Surely there must be something I can do to improve upon this without having to buy a new router

*edit* at the moment I only have the router, I was wondering if buying a switch and having it connected as above would work, I can't see why it wouldn't but networking has never been my strong point.

i also can't swap around the router and the switch because then all traffic would still be coming through the router and it would die anyway

It won't work because, as Zarf said, you can only have one thing connected to the modem at a time. You'd either have the gaming PC connected, or the router (and everything behind it).

You either have to buy a new router or modify your behaviour to stop it crashing (your game might have some option to not open so many connections at once when it's looking for servers).
