Hi, this is my first post in this forum and I don't know a lot about home cinema.

I need a sub and im on a small budget (as little as possible) and want to know if this is worth £40...

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

That sub is woefully underpowered, My brother made the mistake of buying one... it was just totally and utterly underwhelming..

The Mission M2SAS on the same site is better.. 8" driver, 100W... for £99 that's a lot of sub for the money.. (it goes down to 38Hz, not the 60Hz shown on RS's site)..

http://www.mission.co.uk/pigs/loudspeaker_pig_m2s.pdf

Wow - all the way down to 40Hz!

I don't know much about subwoofers, but my bookshelf speakers go lower than that.

I doubt it.. most decent floor standers don't go that low.. ;)

Wow, a 6.5" woofer...

I bought a Gale subwoofer a few years ago, forget what model it was.

That had a 6.5" woofer and it SUCKED! Didn't even produce as much bass as my Mission 702e's.

I then replaced it with an Eltax Sub 10... 10 inches of pure bass... it was absolutely fantastic. I could make the whole house shake!

No

At that price you are not going to get a decent sub, you need to spend about 200 quid.

B&K XLS200 or MMordaunt Short MS309 are good bets

Isn't the XLS closer to £300 though? ;)

Yes they are both 240-290 but they will get below most floorstanders. You want under 20Hz and you are looking at serious money 500+ secondhand

I knew it would be pretty pants but at the moment I dont have a sub and dont have £200+ to spend on one so I need something as a temporary solution.

Local place only has £500+ ones in second hand and £200+ ones in new.

Im going to Milton Keynes later to have a look in Richer Sounds, see if I can have a listen to see how bad it is.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a 2nd hand seller?

Thanks for the advice so far.

Have look over on AVforums.

There is a Kef or mission on there atm for £60 quid!

THat would be far better than the AS one from Richer sounds.

A small KEF would be a compromise, my first proper AV sub was a sub from a KEF 'eggs' setup and wasn't bad at all, these often come up as people keep the 'eggs' and upgrade the sub.

As has been said AVforums will be a good bet from secondhand.

Ive signed up to the av forums and found the thread with the Kef sub.
Unfortunately most of the posts don't mean anything to me as I dont even know what they're are selling! Think im going to have to spend some time doing some research.

Thanks.

Very sensible, don't rush into anything there is a very active sub forum over there and they are used to helping out people with limited knowledge, I built most of my knowledge with the help of members from here and there, which resulted in me building my own dedicated home cinema room.

Yup deffo have a read up!

I ended up getting a bargain off an Auction site!
Its a Gale budget sub, one of their older ones but
am really happy with it the bass is controlled yet really
deep when needed :)

Just a quick question - would you say the kef sub on avforums is worth twice as much (including the cost of postage/me going to pick it up) as the one from richer sounds?

In a word yes, look at the original cost of the sub, you acn still
get it now for between 200 and 220.

It will out perform the other sub by a BIG margin!

Andy

any small sub is a compromise, they simply arent worth the money. if your intending on buying a sub, then £150-200 second hand is the lowest id recommend you go, unless it really is a deal of the century.

I have the B&K XLS200 and have been very impressed with it, can either make it sound very natural or its more than capable of making itself heard. Its nice and compact but has quite a large cone for its size. As with most though I guess, takes a little while to set up properly, I think it also blends in quite nicely with music, which makes a change.
