Hi guys, looking at upgrading from a Q6600 @3.3GHZ, will the following be compatable with each other and would I notice any difference?

General run of the mill. Gaming to programming. Got a 6950 and a OCz SSD to transfer over with current build.

Look at an Ivy i5 and a Z77 mobo. More performance in gaming and has the same amount of threads.

I would look at going for an i5, depending on what games you play it will perform better.

You can overclock the CPU to about 4Ghz on the stock supplied cooler, then later add a £25-30 heatsink to keep the temps low if you want to go higher.

The CPU he specced has 8 threads... i5 Has 4 cores with 4 threads.

AMD FX8320 has 8 threads and 8 cores, divided into 4 modules on 1 die.

8 Dedicated threads would be better for programming.

Gaming i5 would be slightly better, but overclocking would give equal performance

I would look at getting the RAM that Stulid speced, That Samsung RAM is only worth it if you want to seriously overclock the RAM.

I would also look at adding a £30 ish cooler, it will allow you to better overclock the CPU. You can add one later but depending on your case it may make installation difficult without having to pull out the motherboard.

One of these would be good.

Wow, hoenstly didnt think it was that close at stock. I would say they are evenly matched. Looking at the bench the i5 wins 50% and the FX8320 the other 50%

I thought they were worse than that.

Woops, didnt realize some said lower was better... so i5 60/40 FX8320,

Still not bad for the price

Its a no-brainer (especially as you are buying a new motherboard too)

Add one of those coolers suggested by Fire Fly and theres little reason you cant OC it to 4.5Ghz or a bit more.

What games are you playing? For older games that use a single core (look at the WoW benchmark) the i5 is way better but in newer games which are able to use multiple cores (BF3 for example) the FX performs better, but still not as well as the i5 in most circumstances.

Sorry on dodgy 3G connection and its slow as hell and keeps dropping
